I used PS-classic. I tried Zerene Stacker but it created way too much ghosting. I took about six images @f11 using PS. Before this I took about 13 images, @5.6 and the results were almost identical. Lots of right angle white area artifacts. The longer the focal distance between far and near, the worse the results. If the distance is small the technique works fairly well. Example: one flower petal works great. But a whole flower at very close distance creates mush. Look at centre of the image, just mush. I do much better with one shot at F 16. At F22 and 32, the image gets really soft. Great if that's the effect you want.

I did Ok with this one. It was about 20 shots, so I guess I have to create more increments.

That artifact is likely caused by the change in focal length with different focusing points.
It happens to me all the time, could be solved by a focusing rail but it's not worth the effort for how much I shoot close up focus stacking. As John I get plenty of artifacts and correcting for them is a pain, I'm not sure how you guys do it. I did try in the past Helicon and Zerene and they also had issues.

Maybe oscar has the right idea, I should try for something simpler, like a single flower. Anyway I tried one more time using f16 six images trying to capture a larger section of the flower. Here is the result. You can see the artifacting especially around the edges of the petals, doesn't even include what I cropped out and cloned over.

I like these. Especially no 3. It's as if you shrunk yourself and were able to photograph a broken glass pane from a low angle and show us the many facets of cracks in glass.

I keep trying photostacking at the macro level. Results are very poor and I have to get a reasonably clean image. Here is one, but you can see the mid sections went blurry. I started shooting F16 instead. The second is the result.

Perhaps you need a rail so you don't have to refocus the lens?

Does your software also allow adjustment of the separate layers in the stack? Affinity Photo for example will allow stamp-painting from the separate entries.

Thank you for that info, Oscar. I tried Zerene stacker and Helicon. They produce a lot of artifacts, you just have to look close. Right now I am trying PS. Perhaps I should try Affinity. If I understand correctly your meaning, with Affinity, I can designate one image to override the others?

As for focusing rail, way to expensive for such limited use. I have my eye on new full-frame Pentax instead!
