Locations in Japan (Osaka)?
« on: August 26, 2011, 09:36:58 am »

I've left the deserts of the Gulf and now have a new home near Osaka - I know these forums are full of well-seasoned travellers - anybody been to this part of the world with tips to share?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Mike,

Here are some of the locations I went to when I lived in Japan. I was based in Nagoya, so you should be able to cover the same places relatively easily.
Google Map

There are small photos on the map.

More can be found at my flickr account

A good website for travel info is www.japan-guide.com
Hope it helps

I can't recall the name of it, but the place is in Kyoto (not far from Osaka). It's the mountain with the thousands of red Tori. Follow it to a point around half way, and then you'll see what looks like a service path leading off it (steps down on a steep section and hooks back once or twice). Follow the path along for about 10-15 minutes, and you'll find a huge bamboo forest... Around this time of year, I'd imagine it'd look amazing with the foliage all over the ground. Looks very Samurai/Ninja-esque. Very, very pretty.

Also check out the grave yard about an hour away by train in the mountains. It's immense, and you'll easily get some unique shots if you go to the very old sections.

I believe you're thinking about the Fushimi Inari Shrine.  On my one vacation to Japan, it was my favorite place, and produced many interesting photos.  (But I didn't stumble upon the bamboo grove Kagetsu mentions...)

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't been able to make much time for photography since I arrived, but am planning to go to Kyoto in the next couple of weeks. The autumn colours should be underway by then and that shrine looks very tempting.

In the area, don't miss Koya san and Kii hantou in general.

Cheers,

I believe it's the Arashiyama bamboo forest.   It's a short train train from Kyoto.  A shot from March 2006: a frustrated photographer waiting for a scooter to pass through.
