Resolution of D700 in DX crop mode
« on: August 01, 2008, 10:33:51 am »

I am considering the purchase of a D700.  According to Ken Rockwell, when in DX mode the resolution is only roughly 5MP.  I don't consider him the ultimate authority by any means, but this is of concern to me because although I am in the process of switching over to FX pro lenses, I would like to keep my 18-200 VR for a travel/walk-around lens.

Why not just buy a D{40|40x|60} to go with your travel lens?

Edit: BTW, it is ~5MP in DX mode.  www.dpreview.com has a preview of the D700.

According to the specs of the D3 (I guess the D700 is the same), the "large" DX format is 2784 x 1848, which is 5.14 Mpix.

2784 * 1.5 = 4176. The full with of the sensor is 4284pix.

Another way to see this: 1.5*1.5 = 2.25; nominal 12.1 Mpix % 2.25 = 5.37 Mpix.

Honestly,  what have you expected? To find a D300 hidden inside the D700?

My beloved 18-200 VR is the reason why I'm hanging onto my D200 instead of trading up to a D700.  If I were in your shoes, even if you got a D700, I'd hang onto whatever you're using the 18-200 on now to continue using with it; on any particular occasion you'd have the choice of taking the 18-200 on the old camera (for portability & flexibility) or taking the FX lenses on the D700 (for better IQ).

What you get is a better than D2hs hidden in the D3 -- the camera effectively replaced both that camera and the D2xs in Nikon's lineup.

Now when Nikon comes out with a 24 MP FX DSLR, then there will be a D300 hidden inside of that camera.
