Phase One Plus backs
« on: April 04, 2007, 02:09:21 pm »

I just read on the Phase forum that Ulf has recieved his P45+ back in NYC on Monday April 2, 2007.

If it has arrived I hope that he will post a raw shot that we can download and see it at 800 and also, what of the P30+.  Are they a bit delayed?

Does any dealer have a PLUS back yet to test?

I've been told as well that P45+ V backs were produced last week and that P45+ H backs are now starting or about to start production. Phase has told me that they're trying to get me one before I leave for my Amazon shoot on Friday, April 13th.

All of the various models should enter production over the weeks ahead. I'll see if I can find out what the schedule is.

It's amazing isn't it how you always end up going on a shoot with a new peice of gear landing on your doorstep seconds before you leave!

I have just received my P45 V Plus camera back in Florida.
www.imageproduction.com

The wait has been worth it. The preview screen is beatiful and crisp. Great contrast and sharpness, perfect for checking focus.

I have done some standard Hasselblad test but this weekend will be capturing images with Camo Wide and various view cameras at local studios in Florida.

If anyone wants to test this new camera in Florida, please email me at [email protected]

Come to Florida and learn Phase One cameras and software from Chris Snipes. 15 years experience in high end digital capture.

Visit our new Phase One Test studio in St Petersburg, FL. State of the art fashion and catalog studio for rent by the day. Test all the Phase One back at one time and see samples of large prints on display. Ben, I know, it's uncanny. (Either that, of I travel too much).

The question now is, can Phase get me a P45+ and Canon a 1D MKIII in the next 7 days. Film (err, bits) at 11.

So we're supposed to spend 6 grand on 1 extra frame every 30 seconds and better shaded screen performance but worse sun light on screen performance? I do hope the improved image quality is going to impress me.

A heads-up to those who've asked – no. I won't be getting an H series P45+ in time for my Amazon shoot, which I leave on this coming Saturday (April 14). It appears that while V series production is underway, H series won't be ready in time.

A shame, since it would have been fascinating to use the H2 / P45+ in the rain forest.

I'm now waiting to see if Canon will be able to get me a 1D MKIII for testing on that shoot. It could be nip and tuck.

Perhaps it explains why the latest Phase "Newsletter" for the month in which it is shipping its Plus Series of MFDBs devotes so much time to an anti-Hasselblad diatribe and virtually nothing in the way of objective demonstrations of the improvements in these backs over their predecessors. I cannot recall seeing a more negative, defensive advertising piece. I infer from it the anxieties of a VERY insecure company. They do make very fine backs, but so does the competition, and the competition is taking steps to provide tools to phtographers  that Phase simply cannot match.

is this the same newsletter i received? which devotes (so much time!) less then 10% to a major concern photographers using all systems have about the future of the MF market?

virtually nothing to demonstrate? of course not! i am glad that they choose to objectively list some of the improvements and let me decide after testing if they are worth the admission!
i am glad that i don't get some crazy claims that i would not believe anyway...from no company....they have new pdfs with all the info, none of which matters to me anyway....why would i buy anything based on a pdf?

what are the tools that phase cannot provide? backs? software? workflow? i would be more then surprised to hear from anyone that phase is not at least a co-leader in all these aspects....

I think some of you may have misunderstood some of the information that we posted earlier.
It is a gain of 4 captures in 30 seconds tethered.  It was a gain of 4 captures in 30 seconds shooting to a 4GB Extreme IV card, and a gain of 11 captures for the same scenario in 60 seconds.

1. PDFs??? Who said anything about PDFs??? Phase should be able to actually demonstrate the supposed improvements. For starters, how about providing a bunch of raw files from a P45 and a P45+ shot side by side that effectively illustrate "Opticolor" and any other color/tonality improvements(i.e., the kind of side by side comparison you implied you had made when you offered your global assessment about the superiority of the P30 v. the H3D-31.) To its credit, look what Capture Integration is trying to do on its web page in assessing capture rates and the new LCD.

2. What can't Phase provide? The Hy6. The use of a 28mm lens with the H platform. The assurance of long-term access to a camera platform. You and others here on this forum may know that Contax is an excellent camera system that provides a viable platform for the Phase backs, but I  really don't think it's a tenable, long term business model to be in the business of selling $30,000 digital backs to photographers and advising them to go buy a used camera, lenses and accessories for the back on eBay or from some guys in Hong Kong(MOST of whom are honest)?

1. that is exactly what i mean....i have no interest in seeing a phase comparison on the web or printed in a pdf....i prefer to make make those comparisons myself....and i would encourage everybody to not rely an any companies marketing material to draw any conclusions...how are they supposed to include raw files in a newsletter?
i like what capture integration does and i am sure they will do some raw comparisons, which i think is great, but which also don't mean anything to me....

i remember a leaf sponsored comparison they offered as a pdf and on their website a couple of years ago....talk about shooting yourself in the foot....yes they compared their backs to other manufacturers backs, but in the end it is the same...i can make any raw file look good or bad, depending on how i process it....

i am not sure what my "global assessment about the superiority of the P30 v. the H3D-31" has to do with the phase newsletter or this post, but i can tell you that i compared raw files and had my own conclusion about that which i shared briefly as my own personal opinion and as always with such i recommend strongly to everybody to do the same......compare and find out what is right for you....

2.phase is a back manufacturer, does not make cameras or lenses, provides backs for all shipping cameras except for the H3 (which is hasselblads choice) and rolleis.....this should cover probably more then 90% of all MF and large format bodies every shipped.....

if you are concerned that you will be "stranded" with a phase back....you should definitely consider a H3D, which will provide happiness for decades to come.....

but i would check with last years hasselblad buyers who can't fit the 28 on their cameras, but i guess you would blame phase for that as well.....
