New Tools for Rehab/Restoration
« on: May 25, 2025, 02:32:39 pm »

Enclosed are images that started out about 62 years ago. Subject is our oldest son, now 65 and retired. I was very involved in Camera Clubs and the PSA Salons. In both instances the exhibitor had to make their own prints. I used a Hasselblad 500C with 80mm Planar and Kodacolor Negative film. I used Flexichrome Dye  with a paint brush and painted simulated rain streaks directly on the negative. I made 16"x20" "Type C" prints in my home darkroom. Over the last 62 years the framed print has faded badly. About 10 years ago, our son revealed I had made him an 11"x14" print that had not faded as badly. I borrowed it and copied it with a 35mm full frame digital camera. A kind gentleman on this forum assembled for me a Photoshop Action to utilize the old Kodak "Digital ROC" . I applied it to the digital copy of the 11"x14' print image and the color was restored somewhat. I recently added Topaz Photo AI and Gigapixel. I was able to upscale the 11"x14" to 16"x20" but more amazing, I applied "Face Recovery". I am attaching a screen shot showing what a great job it did with face recovery, and Noise Reduction.

Very well done Dave! I too am using either Photo AI or Gigapixel AI to restore old family photos, such as this one from the 1920s (box camera negative source).

That is impressive. I also have just restored a bunch of old family photos. These started out as old prints that I scanned and applied some of the newer tools.

Exactly, I am doing the same thing.

Tip: Clean up any dust or marks on the faces manually before doing the treatment, otherwise these defects might get added in to the upscaled features (I did not do that here in this quick test with my grandmother). Other than that, this is great fun and usually very successful!

These are remarkable. I am pleased with the restorations I am doing, and so are our kids and grandkids.
