Question about metadata syncing DNG to original RAW
« on: July 18, 2024, 07:21:05 am »

My workflow is at follows:

the Raw ( nef) in Lightroom is first enhanced : Raw details and noise AI; i get a DNG as an outcome- i edit that to taste in LR
then i export the dng to tiff and work in photoshop for a final edit.
after that i delete all the DNG enhanced files. It saves space and in future better AI will make them redundant.

Now i discover ! I have also deleted the edits made in Lightroom. How can i save those?

How can i Sync the edits of the enhanced DNG's to the original RAW files? ( not only on by one i hope?)

Can you recover the deleted DNG files, or too late?

In future or with any you can recover just select the DNG and Raw and Synch the settings.

In future as you edit the DNG have the Raw selected at the same time and turn on Autosynch

I can't see a way to batch all pairs to do them in one sitting.

You understand my pain... ! thanks for responding!
By mistake i thought that the NEF also got a XML sidecar with the edits: Because I also use Fast Raw Vieuwer and now it turned out to be the XML-sidecar from that program...
That is why I did not discover this problem earlier. I think it is a major mistake from ADOBE not to change the Raw-sidecar at the same time with the DNG or any way ; give the choice to do so...

Yes,  i can go down my backups of the last half year or more and restore everything! but that will take me days.

My solution now in the future is first do the editing in the Raw first and then enhance the Raw to DNG - unlike Adobe advices me to do.

Why not make a Virtual Copy of the DNG (before deleting, something I do NOT recommend).

I don't use the catalogue, so maybe i can export metadata from a DNG?

You can’t use Lightroom Classic without the catalog.
And there is this:

And there is this:

Ok, let me say i throw away the catalogue every now and then because I don't use it really and it does not fit in the way i work. I like to freely move around my photos in the finder.

I use PSB files -as in between - my files are too large... they contain several raw files and i only save the result as a 16 bit tif...

but thanks for the help.

I think LR should make it possible to easely save the edits to the original raw - and not one by one
I shoot a thousand photos a day

PS

i just did a 500 copy paste metadata from enhanced DNG to NEF;    much work!
AI masks are recalculated so takes more time.

The other way around: first developing the NEF with an AI-mask and then apply enhanced detail+ noise reduction copies automatically all the AI masks and seems not slower than without (?)

Can you copy an AI-generated mask as  AS IS ; without recalculating?

That would be helpful in the many instances since the calculation differs always less or more from one image to the other - even if they are (almost) the same.

DNG, yes; proprietary raws, no. Adobe treats them as read-only by design.
