This is a thread about the virus, as is fairly readily apparent from its title. STOP discussing other matters, or I will shut it down; and it will not be replaced.

What exactly is the problem discussing other items here? You labeled it the Playpen...let us play.

Yes, there is some confusion.

1. Politics can be discussed only in the Covid-19 Playpen, but any posts should relate to Covid19.

2. How about opening new thread on a non-Covid-19 subject with a risk of mentioning some political angle? (Elections, economy, photojournalist's reportage covering the current events, rogue actors speaking to an empty chair, next mass shooting, etc.)

No, that's not true. Re-read my post here, concentrate hard and try to understand it this time.

Feel free. Open as many political threads as you like, within reason; but (1) don't discuss the politics of the virus anywhere but here, and (2) don't discuss politics here, other than of the virus.

So, is DeSantis’s sainthood on hold?

So, is DeSantis’s sainthood on hold?

For posterity (and to avoid after-the-fact spin), let's note a few dates:

May 18th - Florida open for business according to Gov. Desantis.
May 23rd - 25th - Memorial Day weekend.
May 25th - George Floyd Dies
May 30th - First large-scale (200+) George Floyd protests in Florida
June 1-3  (app. two weeks after opening but only 1-3 days after a couple hundred people protest) - Florida COVID cases skyrocket.

So much for the virus dying in the warmer weather. The numbers are on increase, and the rise could be attributed to the recent mass demonstrations. In the meantime, many medical offices are still locked down and patients are prevented from receiving lifesaving treatments and therapies.

Quote
With a majority of states lifting restrictions that were implemented to slow the spread of the coronavirus, close to half of the nation's states are diagnosing new Covid-19 cases in increasing quantities, according to data from The New York Times, and the total number of deaths due to the virus passed 110,000 over the weekend (more than twice the number that President Trump said he believed the overall American death toll from the pandemic would be, which he placed between 50,000 and 60,000 people.)

The intersection of racism and COVID-19 revealed itself yesterday when an Ohio state senator asked the question does “the colored population” get hit harder by the coronavirus because they “do not wash their hands as well.”

Well, no, it really can't.  Not quite yet.  But I have no doubt said demonstrations will prove to be problematic in the (very) near future, with a couple of caveats:

1) We keep hearing that COVID is just a cold to people under 50 (most protesters?);
2) But we are also seeing that COVID has an outsized impact in minority communities and high density communities.

But the scariest situation is a bunch of youngsters with just "cold symptoms" not getting checked out and passing the virus onto others including people who are elderly or have medical conditions.

One of the hypothesis why men are more susceptible to the virus than women is that... guess what... women have a habit to wash their hands more often than men. If that is true, other cultural factors might be in play too.

Women are no less likely to contract the virus than men.

Women are no less likely to contract the virus than men.

Correct. However, infected men are more likely to die from it than women.

Quote
There has also been a sex difference among deaths. Mortality data from 21 hospitals in Wuhan between 21 and 30 January, for example, revealed that 75 per cent of those who died were men. Since then, larger studies from other countries have backed up these earlier findings. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, for example, around 70 per cent of critically ill patients admitted to intensive care have been male, and a higher proportion of men than women have died. A study of more than 4000 covid-19 patients in New York City hospitals found that 62 per cent were male.

The difference doesn’t appear to be caused by differential rates of infection: the New York study, for example, found that equal numbers of men and women catch the virus. But men are more likely to progress to severe illness and death.

Which culture are you referring to? To my knowledge he was talking about Americans.

All in all, another missed opportunity for a politician to have kept his idiot mouth firmly shut.

Seriously, you can't possibly be that stupid to claim there is a single, monolithic "American culture"?

Women are no less likely to contract the virus than men.

Any proof of that? Or you just throw a claim off the top of your head (not to mention some other anatomical places), to appease your non-sexist woke persona?

The difference in mortality rates are hard data. The "study" from NY your quote is just that, yet another study in the deluge of studies that are done hastily these days. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't correct.

If correct, one possible explanation is that more frequent hand washing transfers less viruses, thus causing less severe symptoms.
