Y-axis: number of cases.
X-axis: previous 7-days average of number of new cases. This gets rid of daily ups and downs and provides a btter understanding of trends.

Countries should only open up, slowly and in a phased way, when the trend is clearly going down.

What does a country do if the trend starts going back up?

Yes, it's not that difficult to see.

A quick example, you have a factory with 40 employees. It needs at least 20 to be able to run.
30 will get sick, out of them 4 will end up in the the hospital, out of them 1-2 in the ICU, out of them one will die.
How many do you think will be willing to come to work knowing one died and few others are in the hospital?
Even if you cut those numbers in half people won't think, well the statistics are in my favor.

The other thing about the statistics is that they can matter not if you are on the wrong side of them. Out of the above example, let's say 1/40 will die, do you think he/she will care their chances were only 1/40?
But factories are setting up isolation procedures to keep their workers safe.  Dividers, PPE, verifying they're healthy before letting them into the factory, etc. You're assuming that they'll go back to the old way of manufacturing.

By your standards, and those being put forth on testing, it can never be done.  The amount of testing being called for is impossible.

You, and others, are trying to make it look like you are for opening up so long as certain parameters are met, but all you are suggesting are unrealistic, such as 5 million tests a day or suddenly make all American more responsible (as if we are not already).  So the net effect would be to never open up.  Essentially, you are not for a realistic strategy, or at least up until recently you were not.

But like I said, good to see you finally realize we need to open up.
They're starting to come around to your "opening the economy" beliefs because they've looked at their shrinking checking accounts.  Or their wives have.  :)

Great piece on how Cuomo owns all the nursing home deaths.

This nursing home disaster is on you, Gov. Cuomo: Goodwin

Essentially on March 25th, the governor's office put forward a policy that any retirement home must take in a resident that tested positive for C-19.  There were no exceptions and this policy is still in place.  Cuomo is trying to act as if he did not know about this, but he is known as a micro-manager, so it is not a great defense.  On top of that, the fact that this was brought to his attention last week and he has not made any change is also not looking good.

He is also trying to use a myriad of other excuses, including trying to blame Trump, surprise, strong arming directors to be quiet with threats.

Cuomo, in response, has constructed an evolving litany of self-defenses, once coldly asserting it was “not our job” to help the homes get protective equipment for their staffs, even as other officials said the equipment was being provided. His office claimed the state policy mirrored federal policy, which, as the AP noted in its report, isn’t true. The feds never mandated that nursing homes be forced to accept COVID-19 patients.

Talk about avoiding responsibility.
What he fails to mention is that it isn't the Federal government's "job" to get states their equipment either.  He and the NYC mayor failed at that.  Then blamed Trump.  I haven't heard anyone in the sycophantic Democratic press call him on it.

The GOVERNORS of their States.  How quickly you forget.

Well, *I've* certainly forgotten... Is today a day when Trump has absolute authority, or a day when it's up to the governors?  And is it time to liberate Michigan, or is Sweden absolutely wrong.  And are we shutting down the task force, or is it continuing indefinitely?

From one CEO (me) to all the rest of you here, that's some G**D*** LEADERSHIP!

 ;D

Edit.  And strength.  That's also STRONG LEADERSHIP.  Ain't no sissies or vacillation in THIS White House.  Huzzah!!!

So Trump was just a lame duck as far as managing the Covid crisis. He had no responsibilities with those deaths. Yep...those sheeple are lock step with their leader. ::)

It's been up to the governors for months.  My governor, of New Jersey, just extended the shut down for another 30 days in New Jersey.  Trump's got nothing to do with it.  Of course, you'll keep on blaming Trump because he's, well, he's Trump.

The government is asking dead people not to keep the checks and mail them back.  It's nice to know there are a few honest people still around.

Stimulus checks: What happens to payments sent to deceased Americans?

I'm not blaming anyone.   I'm just wondering which statement to believe.

I'm not sure that's a good thing as Trump seems confused most of the time...changing his directions as weeble wobble but they don't fall down.

Well when he said that he is in controll of everything, those governors (and the media) went nuts and insisted he is not in control of everything, that it is the governors.

Sorry, but you cant demand that you are in control of your state and only take responsibility for the positives and insist Trump be responsible for the deaths.

Remember this guy?

Coronavirus: Prof Neil Ferguson quits government role after 'undermining' lockdown

This is the guy that lead the Imperial College model that said as much as 2.2M, but at least 1.1M, Americans would die from C-19, which has been seriously debunked BTW.  As it turns out, I guess not even he sees much of a reason for this lock down anymore.  After testing positive for C-19, he decided it was okay to engage in a study session with his married lover.

Real classy act, screwing over the world while screwing over a marriage.

"I'm in control of EVERYTHING.  I have ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY"

"No you don't"

"I'm in control of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.  I take ZERO RESPONSIBILITY."

Make perfect sense.  Also, don't be such a linear thinker.

Well if you want Trump to take full responsibility so much, why did you let the Democratic governors fight tooth and nail to show that they are the ones in control.

But anyway, all this is just fun and games.  With the exception of Cuomo, whom I hold fully  responsible for the nursing home debacle (since it was obvious when that edict was made it would be a bad idea), I dont hold Trump nor anyone else responsible for these deaths.  Loss of freedoms and the economy, that is a different story though.

It's a bad situation all around and to act like we could have avoided all death is disingenuous.  A 1M+ deaths would be pretty bad; 100K is not so bad.  I dont consider it a win, but it is not a defeat either.  Sort of like which is the lesser evil, 8M dead through invasion or 200K dead by dropping a couple bombs.
