Dow down 1900 in two days; Corona virus prediction?
« on: February 25, 2020, 05:03:19 pm »

The stock market is often used as a thermometer for the country's health. I wonder if the two-day drop is entirely because of the spread of corona virus, or if some of it has to do with Bernie fever? If it's the corona virus, is the market saying things will get worse -- even much worse? Right now, the death rate seems to be around 2%. If half the people in the US got the virus, that would be three million dead. What do you think?

I think many are wondering about both the stock market and the corona virus.
The stock market was overly exuberant and the corona virus reports were a good excuse for a correction. Nevertheless, 1900 points drop in just 2 days is very alarming. Hopefully, we are close to the bottom or it will be reached soon.

As to the corona virus, it is hopelessly out of control, with new infection nests all over (and most likely, they are still under reported).
As I recall, in the SARS case, it took about 5 months to completely eradicate it, and it was much smaller in number of infections and in the distribution range. I hope it will never get to half of the world population becoming infected, but a million cases is a very real possibility.

Quote
"We expect we will see community spread in this country," said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. "It's not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness."

There's every chance this will come to be seen as one of those moments in history when Man got his comeuppance. Fly me to the Moon, yet we can't properly feed the world or keep it healthy. You get the picture...

It’s just the same old give and take of evolving organisms - us and them. And there are a lot more of them.

The US is probably in for a major epidemic. Millions of people won't be able to afford being tested even if they think they may have the coronavirus.

Relax; the usual suspects will jump up and appeal their new, catch-all Amendment, and say it's all fake news.

Thank God for countries with a real national health service. Instead of so many false, totally empty and meaningless, theoretical and academic freedoms of choices, a real, profit-ignoring care sytem is what folks require, regardless of how their brains have been washed or litres of kool aid consumed.

Are you saying, Rob, that countries with socialized healthcare are going to have less severe epidemic that the U.S.? Maybe, but really too early to tell.

Hard to say since there are many influencing factors.

Indeed.

I remember the last mass scare, swine/bird flu, about ten years ago in the States. We had a quite well organized (school gym, thousands of people) and quick mass vaccination. Do not remember if they asked for proof of insurance or just proof of local residency, and I do not remember if that cost me anything major.

1900 points is the largest drop since 2015, so maybe it's Obama's fault.

What a wonderful story, thanks so much for posting it.  Now lets deal with the reality.

The man made a personal decision to go for a cheaper plan, knowing it covered less.  A fine choice but it left him paying out of pocket.  So what would have most likely have happened if hte had decided to stay with his ACA plan?  Well given most of the plans are really not much better in terms of initial coverage, he would still be stuck with the same bill.  At best he might have had a gold plan with a small deductable of say $1500, but we really don't know given the story fails to say.  But lets assume he was just as price sensitive when he purchase his ACA plan, and picked a cheaper one with a $6000 deductable.  So he's STILL out of pocket for the hospital bill.

The story was written to mislead and based on the post I am replying to, it seems it worked.

And that misses the point that in a civilized society, such things already cannot happen.

Why?  It's called personal freedom. The guy made a choice, and it appears he choose badly.  You have to wonder if he decided a new iPhone or cable tv was more important to him than better health coverage?

But back to the article, it was not espousing universal "free" healthcare.  It was nothing more than an attack on the President thinly veiled.

The only correct path forward is free market health care! Hospitals only collect 18% of what they bill the Insurance companies.(unless they can sue class action for more then they get 35%) You as the patient are expected to pay your share based on the full original billing say 20%. So the patient really pays the Hospital in full, the insurance company pays nothing and the rest is BS.

It's a beautiful world.
