 6 x17 or a 3-1 ratio is considered as "panoramic" by the IAPP  [a href=\"http://www.panphoto.com/]http://www.panphoto.com/[/url]

3-1 is close to what you get from an Xpan, but is what you get from  a Linhof 617 or the now discontinued Fuji. Also see several new Chinese models.

Thanks-do you know anything about the Gaoersi or Dayi cameras? What would be the equivalent focal length in 617 to the 120 in 4x5?

I have an xpan and the Horseman 617 - I just got the Horseman and have three schneider lenses - its great for incredible detail. Although I am getting used to the 3 to 1 format - I am used to the smaller xpan format. The Hoseman really slows you down in that you only get 4 shots a roll - manual everything. As was stated earlier the 612 is not true pan if you care about those sorts of things. I have a friend with the Hoseman 612 and the slides look great. Going from the xpan to the 617 has challenged me a bit in the extra width when composing. I don't crop any of my images.
