D5 shooter tries A900 w/ 16mm-35mm lens(on both) Hey Wow.
« on: April 26, 2011, 04:14:05 pm »

I'm a long time Canon D5 shooter....but the Sony A900 interested me and I wanted to try it so I got a used one here (thanks Pat) and a used lens on ebay.

I have done some quick testing and as I suspected the Zeiss 16-35 bests the canon 16-35...especially on the edges when @ 16mm.  That's some glass!! The Sony shoots dark and I can't figure out why.. I tried all espouse modes.. (I tend to shoot in P not Auto). Before I gun it up 1/2 a stop, is there something I overlooked? Anyone? Bueller?

As advertised the Sony w/ lens is heavy. Lordy!! Also the battery pales to the Canon's. A heavy day will take two batteries.

The Sony does not have a lot of bells and whistles but it does have a push once and get three image exposure feature (+/- 1/3 or +/-  1/2).. Great for HRD stuff off tripod.
That is a very pleasant surprise. With an 8 gig card that will get you around 72 images.

Canon files in RAW 26 megs+/-  Sony files ins Raw 36 megs +/- .

At first glance is A900 files have more oomph. The canon out of the camera color (colour for our british friends) is warmer.
Is the additional oomph worth it? I tend to shoot for evocative content (even using my smart phone) so perhaps not but as wide angles settings the sharp edges of
the Zeiss glass sure will help. Lot to be said for having better edges.

Nothing fancy a test out studio door

Try cRAW for a 24 MB file. No noticable reduction in any image qualities.

For the rest follow your eyes and heart between the D5 and the A900. There's no bad choice. Pro's and con's of both cameras have been extensively discussed here.

Having shot a lot with Canon (5d I and 1DS III) I prefer the Sony fullframe files. They seem to have more dynamic range, if processed with a good RAW converter. I don't think the AA filter is as agressive either, as I don't seem to need to sharpen them as much. The color response from the Sony is unique --not like anything from Canon or digital Hasselblad. Not a good or bad thing, it just took me awhile to figure it out.
