Correct, I meant 18% gray SNR in my previous post, but I was comparing against the full tonal range graphs in the comment before that, and 450D has better SNR at most gray levels.
450D seems to be better at ISO 100 starting from 1.5% gray, while 550D is indeed better at the very deep blacks. But does that matter? Does 1.5% gray equal to 0-4 on a 0-255 scale? If it does, such advantage is of purely academic interest, as the vast majority of grays (1.5% - 100%) have better SNR with the 450D. I can't even distinguish 0-4 gray levels from prints with my printer (might have been 3 or 5 where the difference is visible, it's been a while since I did the test).
While much of my photography is in low light, I'm questioning the benefits of having better DR only in the very deepest blacks, while all brighter tones have better SNR with the 450D. Even E-PL1 has better SNR than 550D at all gray levels above 8% at ISO 200.
Nope, think that the X-axis scale in the SNR plots is the linear response of the sensor. So to convert the 1,5% to the more friendly 0-255 scale we see in Photoshop, the gamma correction must be applied.
So think you develop your RAW file in ACR with _all_ settings to 0 (a neutral RAW development*) and in the typical Adobe RGB (gamma 2,2). An exposure value of 1.5% under those conditions would fall in:

38That means the 550D beats the 450D in PS levels under 38, i.e. the shadows where noise is usually a problem, not in the well exposed areas.
But we can go on: the truth is that rarely we do neutral RAW developments*. In fact usually the Bright curve increases all levels. So it is even more correct to think that the 1,5% of the sensor is likely to become a level above 38 on your Photoshop daily work.
Looking at the SNR curves, and always assuming they are correct, I find the 550D a more balanced camera: it is a bit worse (or we'd rather say not so good) than the 450D in the well exposed areas and highlights, and it is better than the 450D in the shadows, where noise is really challenging.

I would even say that the intersection point of SNR for both cameras at ISO100 is around -1,7 in the X-axis log 10 scale, that translates into 10^(-1,7)=2%, which corresponds to a 0-255 value of 0,02^(1/2,2) * 255 =
43Regarding performance in low light conditions, i.e. when ISO needs to be pushed, the same applies: you can expect some extra noise on the 550D in the well exposed areas, but less noise in the underexposed areas, where noise is really a problem.
And _all_ the above refers to the SNR plots, that are calculated on a per-pixel basis (the 'Screen' criteria). This means the improvement in SNR that the 550D should experience over the 450D because of its higher resolution (18 vs 12 Mpx) was not yet taken into account.
