Refurbished D80 with dust on sensor?
« on: September 17, 2007, 09:29:09 pm »

Hey there

I recently bought a demo/refurbished D80 from Adorama in NYC.  I took a few dozen shots and noticed that on some there is a quite noticeable black spot.  It is always in the exact same position regardless of focal length and I cleaned the lens a couple times in the event it was some giant piece of dust i couldn't see.

here's a pretty prime example of it, at the top of the image, a bit right of center. hard to miss.

this must be some kind of dust on the sensor or somewhere inside the camera.  i'm pretty clueless about the inner workings of digital cameras.  is this something i can clean myself?  the camera is also under a 90-day warranty via nikon - should they be accountable for the work?

i'm heading away from home in a couple weeks for an extended period and was planning to bring the D80 along - any info appreciated!

thanks so much.

Yes, it is dust on the sensor, a common issues with most DSLRs today.

A quick search will reveal that most people clean up their sensors themselves using various tools, among which Visible Dust products appear to be the best (and typically also the most expensive).

It's quite common for new dslr's to come with a spec of 2. Take it back and get them to clean it. You can clean it yourself once the warranty is finished.

Do a search on "sensor cleaning" and you'll find a lot of references to this issue, and techniques for dealing with it. It's a frequently asked question. WHen cleaning the sensor, make sure you remember the image is upside-down on the sensor, so top-right in the photo is bottom-left looking at the actual sensor.

Thanks for all the advice.
Yes, very basic problem, but one I didn't have on my old D50.
The D80 is under warranty and Phototech here in NYC will do it with a one day turnaround.

thanks again
