WTH?!!
That's crazy!
And kinda cool.

Agreed, that is kinda cool :)
If there was a tilt/shift option which isn't an extention tube and a traditional tech camera which is compatible with the same lenses as 'pancake' camera (vide Arca M Line 2 + RM3D/RL3D), this would be a perfect system. Oh wait, Arca- just develop the shutter module ! :)
-
Wha?? Links?

This is really a great concept, highly inspired by the Hartblei HCam http://hartblei.de/en/index.htm, and by the Sinar m (R.I.P.).
It looks beautiful. But does this concept work with multishoot backs ?

Chris- this was a request shouted in the direction of Arca, that they should develop one. No worries, you didn't miss anything.

It does not, reason: as the Phocus Software looks for H4D (and probably now H5D) bodies it will not even show the multishot
functionality as long as hasselblad will not change this. I have a feeling they won´t........... so, we are stuck to old Imacon multishots which work perfectly.
This will be the same for ALPA unless they get an extra deal with Hasselblad to open this functionality or maybe an electronic mimicing of an H-Body(which I think will be difficult!).

I had considered an electronic shutter but there are already so many cables and batteries compared to shooting 4x5!
-
Actually it would be great if Arca incorporated their electronic rangefinder system (or should I say aperture calculator :) ) into electronic, fully configurable shutter, added some adapters for different lens mounts and do all of that without affecting the focal lengths of the lenses of course (just as with the sliding back adapter and spacers, which is brilliant solution in my opinion).
-
If Arca could make an electronic shutter that fit within the 13 or so Millimeters of the sliding back spacer's thickness I would be damn impressed! It is really nice to be able to vary the Canon's shutter speed in 1/3 stop increments. Damn you Copal!

What's with the miniature screen?

"inspired"?
More like ripped off...

Fred - I see it as a compliment, same thing that happened with Schneider and our Superrotators (whereas "those have taken it from us without paying or fulfilling their contracts" - anybody can add the word that he thinks will fit for this by himself).
on the contrary I even sympathize with ALPA, they follow the same ideas on photography and this makes us connected.
If an idea is good there will be others doing the same thing.
Overall the market is big enough for the 2 of us and I even think this will sport a larger momentum for HCam
as any marketing that Alpa creates for them will also point to us. And we still have a different feature set,
our slider, an open system that can use all techcam accessories from all makers (HCam-B1v)
and a different concept of usage (Top display with separated aperture and time settings all in one user level-no menues!) as well
as probably a different pricing (but that´s speculation).

Great minds think alike. However some lead and some follow.
That said Alpa are fine craftsmen.

Thank you Fred

Seem like the H1b can use wider focal lengths in technical lenses?
-
Eric
we could , but this does not make any sense at all.
As Even Alpa had cancelled the 24mm Schneider and probably also knows about the flaws on the other short focal lenght
Rodie and especially Schneider lenses the flange Focal distance(FFD) of 35mm (around 40mm+x) is an ideal compromise for wideangle
on 4,5x6 chips. A MF FFD has significantly more distance thus needs larger lenses and stronger corrections resulting in higher price and lower quality.
This is the reason a Canon TS-E can be better AND cheaper than an according 24mm MF Lens left alone the fact that a 17mm for the MF FFD would
be a 5 digit price and probably 2 kg heavy.

I was planning on making a focal plane shutter lens board for Canon EF mount and a technical camera as a mechanical design project for me and an electronics project for my dad.
Depending on how much this costs, I may not bother.
Question for Stefan - With an image circle of 67.2mm on the TSE24mmmkII, does this cover the IQ180 sensor completely unshifted (Diagonal dimension of the sensor are 67mm)? How much tilt can you get with your lens modifications?
The HCam is very neat, but I think I am after something ultra portable light.
My other problem is I am in Australia and the local distributor is not in my state, so a little difficult to tryout.
-
Hi David -
Here's a set of test shots I did with the 24mm TS-E on the HCam and IQ180 at various apertures. These are zoomable images that enable you to see the full resolution.
Bottom left lets you select which shot to examine - there is one set taken at 0 shift, and one at 5mm shift up. Names of the files should be self-evident.

Kind regards,
Gerald.

David
The focus with both the 24mm and the 17mm TSE is essential,I would advise anyone using this to use focus bracketing as the lenses sharpness is spheric and
the tolerances with 5,2 Micron Pixel pitch are small. But when you hit the optimum targetplane in a perfect way (I also would always recommend at least f11,5 or even f16)
the results are astonishing - with the Hartblei Lens modifications we can even shift around 3-4 mm with the 17 and up to 6-8 mm with the 24mm TSE.
Here is a sample in full res for the HCam with a Leaf Aptus II 12 and a 17mmTS-E

Thanks Stefan and Gerald,
That 17mm shot is really impressive!
The guys at work saw me checking it out at lunch time, they did not think too much of it until I went to 100%

David
check the distortion of that image - THERE IS NEARLY NONE !
and I swear I have not messed around with it with some tool !
Opened in Capture One a bit sharpening the borders mostly, some devignetting and there you go !

Wow interesting stuff. Stefan, how much tilt can be applied using the Canon 24mm TS lens on an 80MP back? What do you think is the advantage of Hartblei camera vs the Alpa FPS?
-
The Canon TS-E 24mm V2 Lens has a Tilt of 8,5 degrees.
As this does not even move much(it´s tilting neatly close to the main point of the lens) you can use the tilt for full, butof course it may be that on the large chip the outer
areas my not be of superior quality on a full tilt.
The HCam is having a motorized slider, includes all adapters cables and even the viewfinder, so you can start shooting right away if you have a lens and a back.
The FPS Is an ALPA and needs to be configured to what you want with several adapters front , back, probably cabling which may add to the system price.
But nobody knows this one right now.
BTW everybody can now see our new Hartblei Sidefocus 4/120mm Macro- Optics by Carl Zeiss mounted on the ALPA FPS on the Photokina Hall 2.1 Booth B21.
Greetings from right now Cologne

The ALPA FPS has got the folks over at ALPA really excited.
ALPA has recognized that many shooters have more than one rig for imaging. This system opens up a whole new realm of possibilities.
