Surprising volte-face! I guess that with the $8000 price was not a top seller.

some people actually bought at that price (not people sponsored by Sigma)... imagine that.

Combined with this "return to earth" pricing, Sigma has updated its big-sensor fixed lens compacts, the DP1 and DP2, to use the same 15MPx3 sensor; probably this improved the economies of scale as part of the strategy of reducing the cost of that sensor.

also they just glued lenses there ( to DP1 and DP2) that were developed to be used w/ mirrorless cameras ( http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/01/10/SigmaDigitalNeo )... instead of creating a mirrorless camera of their own... but that probably will be the next step to separate the body and those lenses... so we might assume one more APS-C mirrorless from Sigma "sigma soon".

I think a second look is in order, given its $2300 price. 

One thing I did notice in the first review, though, was the complaint about its colors being off.  Yet, it looked closer to the offset printed example than the other four, especially in the reds and purples.  One thing that the reviewer missed is that the sensor in the SD1 has equal resolution for each color, unlike Bayer sensors.  I think the reviewer was so used to the over-saturated mess that Bayer sensors typically give you that realistic colors come off as "wrong".
