Could informed people tell me if Leaf still continues to support the AFi after it is no longer offered? Is the back's software still updated? Servicing?
After several emails to them I never got any reply from Leaf whatsoever.
Also, any news regarding the status of its reconsideration on further offering the AFi platform?
Thanks

Read this thread on the GetDPI.com forum...It would appear the answer is no plans at this time to support the AFI camera and backs for the AFI per Yair, a representative of the new Leaf Imaging, LLC.

Thanks for the info. Not the most clear situation from what I can see.
Let me put it like this: if one wanted a digital back for the Hy6, would one still go for a Leaf AFi-II (in my view, with very advanced backs), or go with Sinar instead? Has there been any further development at Sinar after the release of the eSprit 65?

I suppose you can look for a used AFi-II back. Servicing it will be done via Kodak. There are no plans for further development and/ or production for that system.

Hi Yair,
Let me take this opportunity to say that I think you, Leaf Imaging, have an obligation to those of us with the AFi system to keep supporting those models in new software, be it Leaf Capture or the Phase One or both. That is, that we can continue to tether the AFi camera, download files and work with them in current software so we won't be stuck with a camera that can only be run from an older computer and operating system. Beyond that, if service is available from Kodak, I need nothing else: the camera is magnificent, the optics are superb, the AFi-ii 7 back is great and surpasses the quality of my former gold standard, 4X5.
I work only with very large prints for exhibition purposes and this system is easily good enough for that - what else do I need? Just continued service and software support for what I already have.
Anyone who cares to see what can be done with this camera can visit my current exhibition at my own Vision Gallery in Jerusalem or in March 2010 at Flomenhaft Gallery in New York.

All I know is that Sinar continues to support customers with Hy6 and/or Sinar backs.
Sinar has also recently updatet their software exposure as well as firmware upgrades for their backs.
So if someone wanted to use those excellent schneider and Zeiss lenses on a Hy6 I would rather buy a Sinar than a Leaf AFI.
I am Sinar user but find the position of Leaf disappointing.
I would not buy anything from them because you get the feeling you never know if you get future support if they decide to take a product out of the current product sortiment.
But maybe I am wrong and somebody from Leaf or a Leaf user can report otherwise.

This is true. I've just got my Hy6 back from Sinar and it is still the best medium format SLR I have ever used.
Once you have experienced the rotating back it's hard to use anything else.

Thank you,

Hi Carl,
which Sinar back did you order? How is the integration with the Hy6 body? Can one activate/switch off the digital back via the camera body's main power switch or does one have to activate both the body and back separately? Thanks

I must admit I have the same feeling. But the Leaf AFi-II digital systems are really wonderful, at least from what I see on paper. Huge and tilting screens on the digital back, internal sensor portrait/landscape rotation, integrated power management (main switch of the camera also operates the back). I do not know if the latter is the same with Sinar backs. On the lack of feedback from Leaf, I can only echo. I have sent several emails over the past months via their website and to the email address provided there, but never got any kind of reply. Talk about customer service!

Pascal please feel free to forward all those emails to me and I'll do my best to provide all the answers. Yair

The last firmware for the Sinar Hy6 is V3.10 and it is not available on Sinar homepage for download, so I presume, that 3.10 can be provided only by Sinar on the Hy6 bodies with last state of the art hardware. The last firmware on the homepage is V 2.11 and you can download this firmware and upload it by your self to your Hy6, if you have older firmware as V2.11.
Firmware V2.11 updater for Sinar Hy6 for Mac
CAUTION: Please do not install this firmware version if your camera has already firmware version 3.0 and higher. As a result of downgradeing the camera, the autofocus stops working and has to be recalibrated at cost in the factory!

You will find many answers here;
Sinar Hy6 PDF Manual Download (http://www.sinar.ch/en/downloads/category/10-cameras?download=33%3Asinar-hy6-v1-4-en)
Sinarback Manual Download (http://www.sinar.ch/en/downloads/category/11-digital-backs)
Starting the Sinarback has to be done separately, by pressing the power on button on the Sinarback eMotion, the Hy6, if already on (main switch on the camera already on Sshot or Cshot...) will be woke up from standby, by pressing the trigger on the camera. When you want to switch off the system, you can press the button on the Sinarback eMotion, the Sinarback will be turned off, and the Hy6 goes automatically in to the standby.
I still prefer the possibility to jump with my Sinarback from one system to another and to use the same Sinarback with several adapters on several cameras such as Hy6, Mamiya 645 AFDII oder Hasselblad H2 etc.

No, I do the firmware updates from the Sinar website.
My Hy6 needed a CLA, I've used it solidly for almost 2 years.

For our customers here in the states we would still deal with the guys who were Leaf America and now part of MAC Group in Elmsford, NY. Their service is exceptional and we can get messenger service to and from NYC if needed. Leaf Capture 11.2.9 for Snow Leopard was released just a short time ago and the iPod Touch & iPhone software is now available on iTunes.
Best,
Rich Andres

I would like to second what Rich has said in terms of customers in and around the UK. We at Peartree are still more than delighted to help anyone with an AFi and queries arising there from. LC11.2.9 has just been released to support both Snow Leopard and the Leaf AFi (along with a large number of the other Leaf legacy backs) and we are happy to offer assistance to anyone that needs it.
Best Regards
Ben.
