I need to consider buying noise reduction software compatible with Mac OSX.
I have read about Noise Ninja and a couple of others, but would like to know what your experiences and preferences are before I make the investment.
Any input would be appreciated.

Most of the NR programs have free trial periods. Download and try them out and make an evaluation on your own image(s).

I don't use NR software very often but Noise Ninja and Noiseware are my choices. I've never done extensive comparisons but those two fit my needs.

I still have a NeatImage review copy from days bygone, and it works well -for me. At the time quite a few readers wrote in to agree that it wasn't snake oil. These fans wrote post-review so these weren't shills for the authors.
It seems noise reduction is a bit of a boutique product, you need to test and find one which works well with your own workflow and the camera you own.
I'm a bit astonished that Adobe and Phase still haven't got better NR built-in, they could just buy out one the existing plugins.
On the other hand, NR is often used it with an aging camera that maks fine pix except in the most extreme conditions. So maybe the camera makers wouldn't be happy to see good NR in PS because it would kill one of their upgrade arguments.

i have not found Neatimage to be that great (for me it gives unacceptable results with wildlife, but maybe the rest do also), and there is a significant learning curve - not really sure if it is that much better than the fairly rudimentary noise reduction in RAW 4 in many circumstances
the noise reduction in RAW 4.1 is supposed to be an improvement, but i haven't done a comparison yet
i'd love to hear comments form anyone with experience

They all have problems with wildlife. Fur and grasslands are the natural enemies of noise reduction.

All three of them - Noiseware, Noise Ninja and Neat Image are very good products for reducing noise in digital captures. I have all of them and I've used them extensively. I find Neat Image works better than Noise Ninja for images from scanned negatives, but Noiseware seems good for film scans also (I have tried it with film, but not accumulated as much experience using it for that purpose). I think Noiseware does a slightly better job protecting detail then the others, but that is impressionistic - I've not done rigorous comparisons. I really believe regardless of which you use, the most important thing is to get the settings right for the image whose noise you are reducing. That probably makes more of a difference to outcomes than which of the three products you use. So the bottom line from me: a moderate preference for Noiseware, with much attention to settings no matter what. I agree with those who suggest testing them all. Costs nothing but time, ink and paper, and then you'll no for sure what is best for you.

I like Imagenomic Noiseware Professional. I use it as a PlugIn with Photoshop. The software is available in a trial download, though your finished product is marked with a grid. I find noise reduction with this software has to be used judiciously. A little reduction goes a long way.

Hello,
I have used "[a href=\"http://www.picturecode.com]Noise Ninja[/url]" and "Noiseware Professional as a Plugin of PS (http://www.imagenomic.com/support.aspx)".
Both of them are very good products.

Noiseware is tops in my book.

Up until I got Noiseware Professional, I used Neat Image. It's still a great program, especially for free (demo version).
Now, I only use Noiseware as a PS plug-in.
