Our sunsets have been pretty gray lately, at least when I've been able to get out.
So when the scene is almost completely devoid of color anyway, a mono approach is the natural solution.
I kind of like the freedom of developing a mono image too. I can concentrate more on form and placement of elements and creating areas of contrast to draw the eye in. It's a more distilled approach, at least in my head.

I really like this. The texture in the water does nice things with the way the clouds in the sky are reflected, not to mentioned the way the whole thing almost looks like a spiral meeting around the small island in the middle.

Thanks. I like it too so I'm glad to know it's not just me.
All the things you mention are also elements I liked. I waited for those clouds to move into position. They were farther left initially, with some open space over the creek. I could see that once the cloud moved over the creek, it would compliment the shapes on the ground with the added bonus of eliminating an area with no interest. I was happy to see it move onto position for me!
