My top, bottom, ands side panels have disappeared in all Lightroom CC2015 , this is not a case of tab or tab+shift or of being switched into fullscreen mode but of the real estate where the panels should be showing panels being blacked out. I am in OS X 10.11.4
This was not happening this morning.
When I minimize the Lightroom window and then open it up again the panels are reappear until I do anything, then they disappear again. When I toggle from full to standard view they reappear briefly and disappear

Problem solved by closing Lightroom and then re-launching. It may have been caused by my putting the computer to sleep while I went to the gym and had lunch.

Yes, dangerous things: gyms. Avoid.

Hmmmm.... you would expect it to come back from sleep gracefully. Was anything else beside Lr running on the computer?

As it has hundreds of times for me up until today. Katrin Eismann suggests "Trash the prefs just like in PS. Quit and relaunch while pressing command + option+ shift...and click yes to reset prefs.”

'Weird behaviour' is normal behaviour for Lightroom CC2015. I haven't spent a moment of my adult life in a gym & my installation of Lightroom is erratic in it's behaviour. Glad to hear it's working again for you.

Perhsps for you but not for me. For me it has been extremely stable. I haven't spent a moment of my adult life in a gym
good for you. I find relaxing.

A good solution. It does beg the question though, how did the prefs get corrupted?

Good question. All I know is, for YEARS this has been an issue with Photoshop and more recently LR. I've seen the fix work more times than I can remember, especially with Photoshop.

And ask why for years it's only really been a problem on the Mac.

And ask why for years it's only really been a problem on the Mac.
Maybe for LR but not Photoshop, not in my experience, with hundreds if not more tech support issues reported through our software company.

With all apps trashing the preferences is a Mac cure-all in a way it simply isn't on Windows.

Again, that's simply not correct for Photoshop based on many years of tech support calls for Pixel Genius customers experiencing a number of PS issues on both platforms. Trashing the preference's, according to years of feedback from these customers fixed the various wonky issues reported. I don’t know if you are purposely trying not to understand this, or if you are really struggling with it.

Just ONE of many resources that don't agree with John's (presumably unscientific, blanket statement about Windows):
http://creativepro.com/photoshop-tips-trashing-the-preferences-file/ (http://creativepro.com/photoshop-tips-trashing-the-preferences-file/)
You’re a savior! I didn’t know you could trash preferences on a Windows machine just like a Mac.
And the article's screen capture, to these eyes appear to be Windows.
Further, NO ONE stated it was a cure for all. But it's a cure quite often on both platforms.

“There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” -Søren Kierkegaard
Katrin, I, Creative Pro and other's haven't been fooled. Based on years of assisting Mac and Windows users who specifically contact us due to issues, the task of deleting preferences and the results are clear. At least to those who are not fact deniers or have not been fooled by refusing to face the truth.
Not that anyone here should listen to Adobe instead of John but....

Unexpected behavior may indicate damaged preferences. If you suspect damage to preferences, restore preferences to their default settings.
No mention here or elsewhere this only applies to Mac users.

Woo, Andrew can use Google..... Andrew thinks he's a scientist.
Grow up, Andrew, yet again you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. You know that preference corruption is mainly a Mac problem. That's no big deal, and there are other problems that tend to be more Windows-related. I don't care if you don't admit that's a fair generalisation - I wasn't originally replying to you, was I? So be a big boy and stick me back on your ignore list please - it'll be better for everyone.

Ooh, aren't you important? You know the generalisation is fair - you're just arguing for the sake of it....

All generalizations are false, including this one.-Mark Twain
Now between Katrin and Adobe (Julienne Kost), another actual LR pro and expert, is Victoria Bampton** who's FAQ is a must have reference. Page 543 on trouble shooting:
Reset Preferences
If you’re still having problems, resetting Lightroom’s Preferences can solve all sorts of ‘weirdness,’ so it’s a good early step in troubleshooting.
There’s a simple automated way of doing it—just hold down Alt and Shift (Windows) / Opt and Shift (Mac) while opening Lightroom and it’ll ask whether to reset the preferences. The timing is crucial— hold them down while clicking/double-clicking on the app/shortcut. (Figure 22.18)
Alternatively, you can reset the preferences manually. Moving or renaming the preferences, rather than deleting it, means that you can put it back if it doesn’t solve the problem, to save you manually recreating your preferences again.

Again, I made a fair generalization about corrupt preferences being more of a problem on Mac. You're just arguing (a big word for cutting and pasting) for the sake of it. Not taken your pills today, eh?

Ellis, if you don't mind me asking:
1. Do you check the 'Use Graphics Processor' option?
2. Do you use many adjustment brushes on your images?
For me
1. Doesn't to help much one way or the other although Lightroom seems to feel sluggish in slightly different ways depending on whether or not the option is checked.
2. Using multiple adjustment brushes really slows Lightroom down for me.
Lightroom is actually stable for me in that it hasn't crashed on me except for a weird period lasting a couple of days last week. I've been using merged HDR images quite a lot recently ( I really like this feature ) so maybe that's not helping.
Didn't mean to sound snarky about the gym thing. I hit 50 a couple of years ago & I reckon the years spent 'not going to the gym' are going to bite my arse big time in the near future. ( At least that's what my blood pressure monitor is telling me...).

The generalization about corrupt preferences being more of a problem on Mac is fair, Andrew. You know it's true, and you're just arguing because you have a problem. zzzzzz.......

John, I'm curious. How do you judge that it's more of a problem on Macs than Windows machines? I've seen nothing from Adobe on this.
I had Windows machines until recently and had preference file problems with those machines. To be honest I've not had any pref file problems on my 4 Macs in 5 years. To be fair, that's just been my experiences and not representative of a larger number of machines.
-

Carl Sagan: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". ::)
The facts are, if Photoshop, (probably LR I've got less evidence through our tech support emails) is acting up, crashing etc, deleting (what Adobe prefers to call resetting) preferences is often the fix.
The statement: With all apps trashing the preferences is a Mac cure-all in a way it simply isn't on Windows, is without merit. Actually, the idea that trashing the preferences is a Mac cure-all is nonsense too.

You just need to have followed forums in detail for a good few years, Ron, and if one had the time or interest to analyse them, I'm very confident that analysis would support my generalisation. It's not a value judgement on either platform (and should be no more controversial than saying Windows suffer from more registry problems), and to explain it one would have to dig a lot deeper into preference files' architecture and perhaps determine what is getting written into them that doesn't happen on Windows. As in this case, trashing preferences appears to fix a problem on Mac, but too often it gets recommended as a knee jerk reaction for problems on Windows.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, John. I appreciate it.
Background: I worked in computer technology from hardware to software for 40 years. I got my first IBM PC in 1981 after having a few other brands but not Apple. My acquisition of Apple hardware began 5 years ago after a series of bad computers from Dell and disgust with Microsoft's lack of attention to the Windows OS. I do not believe that the sun rises and sets with Apple but I do like their hardware and most of what I see in their operating systems. Both MS and Apple seem to employ ancient file systems.
Like you, I've long followed forums on computers (not just personal computers) and Adobe products. I just never saw the knee jerk reactions you mentioned. I don't doubt they exist though. Like most things on internet forums there is a lot of unsubstantiated folklore.
