...followed by a distraction display. I only stayed a few seconds to minimize stress for the bird. American avocet.

Thanks Eric and Bob. #1 is one of my very few successes. Diffuse sunlight helped, bright but not shadowy.

Yes I favor #1 as well.  Nice work on a tough subject.
