External editing in LR
« on: April 25, 2015, 08:40:48 am »

Is it possible to associate the external editing file naming presets with the external editing presets?  I'm in the External Editing preferences.  Specifically, I have the NIK plugins, and I'd like the file naming to match which plugin I choose.  So, if I edit in Viveza, I'd like the file name to be appended with 'viveza'.  And for Colour Efex Pro, with 'CEP'.  etc etc.

You can do this.

You would have to create a Custom File Naming Template for each.
then
Go to Preferences>External Editing tab.
Pull up Viveza in the Additional External Editor section.
At the bottom of the section is the Edit Externally File Naming: Pull down.
Apply the appropriate template you created in the first step.
Then, in the Preset Pulldown (top of the Additional External Editor section) select Update "Viveza" Preset

Correction-this does not work as I described. The naming is not attached to the external editor preset.

You sure, Rikk?

I don't think the naming template is stored as part of the external editor definition (see below). So Edit With will simply use the current value of the external editing filename in Preferences. You can see this if you swap between different external editor presets - the filename template stays the same.

John

s = {
   id = "0FFFEF11-23FE-49F6-9B68-69160B39CB3F",
   internalName = "Silver Efex Pro 2",
   title = "Silver Efex Pro 2",
   type = "ExternalEditor",
   value = {
      externalEditingFormat = "TIFF_None_16_ProPhotoRGB",
      externalEditingFormat_dpi = 240,
      externalEditorFullPath = "/Applications/Nik Collection/Silver Efex Pro 2.app",
   },
   version = 0,
}

By golly, John, you are correct.  The Edit Externally File Naming is independent of the Additional External Editor.  I didn't check it through two use cases.

This brings up something I have been doing for a long time now...When using External Photoshop, the mother of LR, after opening and doing edits and when ready to "Save As", I was hoping by version 6 LR would ask me if I want to include the save in the catalog.

For now every time I launch external edit in Photoshop, either I have to save it in the default TIF that it opened it as, or any other format is excluded and I manually have to add it by going back, switching to Lib mode, finding the folder/GoToFolder, and then RightClick to Sync Folder, wait for it to asses it by scanning all the images, and then accepting the add.

 Why not simple ask if we want to include it as a loopback to LR?!!

If you opened the file via Edit With, you can save in many formats, not just TIF, and LR will automatically catalogue the resulting file providing you used Save or Save As.

You can make it fail to do so if you save as an unsupported format, or if you duplicate the image and only save the dupe in PS.

Maybe I have a setting disabled, as I do as you mention, but it doesn't end up in the catalog. Maybe I have to be extra patient with it?
