Lightroom 6 Hard Drive grinding
« on: April 24, 2015, 08:21:59 pm »

I have installed LR6 on my Mid 2010 Mac Pro using 10.10.3, 32GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD5770.

The catalogue and files are all on the same drive but since upgrading from LR5 the hard drive is constantly grinding. As soon as I close LR6 it stops.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on it's driving me nuts?

Thanks.

That's a new one for me.
First, back up the drive ASAP
2nd, could it be that the drive is just accessing data when LR runs and it's the drive? Other app's could produce the same sound?
Backup, run Disk Utility to check it unless you have other drive utilities (Drive Genius etc).

Do you have face detection enabled?  The "grinding" you hear might be LR accessing the drive as it recurses through your file hierarchy in the background to find faces.

I turned face detection and the graphics processor off and not only is the hard drive quiet again but the whole app is a lot smoother and faster, thanks :-)

I just upgraded to LR6/CC and the performance was much slower than LR5.  I disabled GPU processing and it's back to normal speed.

What Adobe haven't done a good job of with this upgrade is explaining that the initial indexing of your catalogue for face recognition will take time and whilst it's happening some machines will likely be less responsive. Once the inital indexing ahs been completed, performance should return to normal.
GPU acceleration won't effect HDD thrashing, but if your HDD is making a lot of noise take Andrew's advice; back it up and get it checked out.
