Canon 16-35 F4L lens with Vari-ND filters
« on: April 12, 2015, 01:07:52 am »

Does anyone know of any Vari-ND filters that will not vignette with the Canon 16-35mm F4L lens?

I've got the Vari-ND Duo and the Helio-pan Vari-ND filters for my 70-200 f2.8L IS II and the 24-70L II, but am looking for a filter that will not vignette with the 16-35 F4L.

Anyone have any experience with the B+W xs Pro Digital Vaio MRC 77mm, the Formatt Hitech 77mm Multi-stop ND, or the Rodenstock 77mm Digital Vario ND MC Slim, or the Schneider 77mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter???

I'm interested in experiences anyone have with these filters and specifically am interested in knowing if vignetting is an issue with ultra-wide angle zooms, if there is any color shift and if so at with ND levels and if the dreaded "X" shows up and if so, at which ND strength settings and which focal length and aperture settings.

The Cokin Pure Harmonie variable ND won't vignette on that lens.  They are designed such that the glass element is slightly wider than the filter thread and they are fairly thin.  They do impart a yellow color cast that you will have to deal with either via custom WB or in post:

At that wide of an angle, I think it's unavoidable with heavier ND applications.  I personally prefer something like a 10 stop straight ND for really wide lenses to avoid some of these artifacts.

I don't think you can avoid the "X" on any lens less than 35mm, especially when pushing the ND to its max. I also use a straight ND filter when working with wide angle lenses.
