Think Pink
« on: April 04, 2015, 11:01:19 am »

Roseate Spoonbills run a close second in the bird world for looking the most awkward in flight or just looking downright "weird," simply sitting. The funny spoon shaped bill, while great for foraging in the shallow swamplands, is a strange appendage.

Thanks, David. I like all three but then I like Spoonies in all their awkwardness.

Agreed. The third is pretty good too, but the shape of the bill isn't apparent.

+1.

The second seems to be suggesting that Spoonbills can carry a walking stick with them at all times. Adds a bit of stability when wading where the bottom is uneven.

They're in mating plumage and building nests. Back and forth they go, stick by stick. It's interesting to watch.

Chris,
Very enjoyable ! You really do justice to their colors.
Roseate Spoonbills  once came close to extinction in LA. Is this Lake Martin by any chance ?
They're actually beginning to show up in small numbers on Blind River in the Maurepas Swamp.
Thanks again.

Here in Louisiana they're known as the Cajun Flamingo.
On Blind River they stand at the waters edge digging and scooping and letting me get a lot closer then any of the other wading birds do.
Your fotos really succeed in presenting them as they are !
