High Desert Springtime
« on: March 31, 2015, 08:08:15 pm »

The Owyhee Desert is in southern Idaho and northern Nevada.  This is the perfect time of year to be out there.  The grass is greening, the shrubs are budding and the temperatures aren't too extreme.  The colors in the early morning and late evening are wonderful.

A very nice series with great colour, great detail and excellent local contrast. I really enjoy the last two in particular, but I'm a sucker for broad landscapes and foreground detail.

I look at that last one and wonder . . . are there any trout in that stream? ;)

I like them all and especially the last three photos. They have a good, near/far composition and the light is great.

Thank you all for the replies.  I'm glad you enjoyed them.

David, unfortunately this is a snow melt stream.  It's running full right now, but by June it'll be down to a trickle and later in the summer will just have puddles.....so no trout.

Beautiful set. DOF and foreground clarity are wonderful. Thanks for posting.

Composition in the last one is great!
I wish there were some clouds in the sky.  But without them it really gives a feel of a crisp clear day.

Very good series. I would also like to see some clouds in the sky, but the light is wonderful.

Very good series. I would also like to see some clouds in the sky, but the light is wonderful.

Typically, there are clouds in that area as it's a transition zone where weather fronts cross.  But, on the days I was camped there this time it was clear for the duration. I'm headed back out there a little later today to camp for a few days with hopes of doing some images of the lunar eclipse.  The stream will continue to flow until late June, so I'll try to get another similar shot with some clouds in the sky....although those willows will soon lose their red coloration.  Thanks for the comment!

I should have been more clear with my compliment.  I really like this series, but am most drawn to the last one with the brook.

Several years ago, I camped beside a little brook in the Hart Mountain National Wildlife Reserve, similarly high desert in Eastern Oregon.  The brook's flow looked as if it could have been fed by my garden hose.  There were trout in it.  Amazing.

#4 my favorite, and next to it, #3.
A proof that you don't need to follow other people's tripod holes to make wonderful photos.
Also, another incitement to "See America First" for those who live in the USA. Another bucket list item: kit up a small trailer or a Sprinter van, and go on the road to visit national and state parks for months at a time. Well, right now I am still working on "60 trails within "60" miles of St. Louis" list.  :)
