White is not white
« on: March 18, 2015, 05:24:27 pm »

I have a photoshop v5.1 file which I created a white border around the image. I did this by changing the canvas size. When I printed the image I noticed that the "white" border is off-white. When I check the RGB values they are R249,G249,B249 instead of 255. When I try to change the values to 255 and then check them they are back to 249. It is only one image file that is giving me this problem. Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks!

How are you checking the RGB values? If you are checking them on the screen using the DigitalColor Meter then you are measuring the screen colours and not the colours of the embedded profile. You would need to check them in Photoshop with the same profile as the embedded profile.

Does it have an embedded profile?

I'm checking them in Photoshop. The color space is Adobe RGB

Try using the quick selection tool to select the border, and then deleting the selection.

Before or after conversion? V4 profile and scum dot issue?

I had no clue that there was a problem till I made a print and noticed the off-white color. I had added a white border with the: Image-Canvas Size tool. I picked white for the canvas. The image in the print dialogue showed the “white” canvas was slightly darker than the “paper”.  They should have both been white.  So I checked it with the eyedropper tool and discovered that the RGB values were 249, 249, 249 instead of “255”. After many attempts I was finally able to succeed in changing the color to the 255 value ( the eyedropper tool verified the 255 value). Then when I attempted to make another print the print dialogue still showed the canvas as off-white. The only way I was able to correct it was to flatten and crop the image then paste it into a new document. I was then able to add the “white” canvas without any problems. It is a mystery to me.

Not sure what you mean by  "V4 profile and scum dot issue"

The version (how) the output profile was created. You do not want a V4 ICC profile and using one can depending on a few issues cause a scum dot that makes an off-white color in non printable areas.

I have a feeling this has more to do with the canvas extension color setting when you changed canvas size, than the other issues addressed here
