NEC PA2x1 vs 2x2 ?
« on: March 12, 2015, 02:31:37 pm »

For those of you have actual field experience between the PA241 and 242 or 271 and 272 monitors, pls
discuss your experience & preferences.

Is the xx2 LED backlight series (other than power consumption factors)
a worthwhile 'upgrade' or 'nice to have if you're stepping up from a Dell ;) but not worth it if you have a fine xx1 series' ?

I have both a 272W and 271W, use the newer one far more but both are excellent units, no issues. There are advantages over the newer LED in the 272 series!

- approx. 1-2dE better uniformity than former PAxx1 series
- satin diffuser vs matte difuser in PAxx1 - the image is cleaner, with less sparkling/clouding effect and more punch
- lower minimal luminance - PA241 goes down to ~90cd/m^2 while PA242 achieves ~40cd/m^2 natively
- slightly larger gamut than PAxx1
- lower power consumption
- Improved long term stability.
- Mini DisplayPort and HDMI inputs.
- Ability to update factory calibration in SpectraView.
- Stand-alone calibration using the NEC MDSVSENSOR3 (NEC custom i1d3) on the PA302W (no software needed) LED backlight.
- The backlight sensor also monitors whitepoint in addition to luminance
- GB-R LED allows more precise control of whitepoint (vs. CCFL)
- LED backlight and luminance sensor = almost instant on & stable

Have you found that the 272 requires/benefits from any form of 'burn-in' before calibrating?

Logic might dictate 'no, it's LED' but just checking.  The really dark blacks dE is higher than on my old 241.
W/ SV, I requested a black point of around 0.4 but it gave me 0.24.  So, then the question is, can I use Multiprofiler to bump the black (I assume 'yes).

Will play some more w/ it and see if I can characterize it better.
