What's your P&S?
« on: January 17, 2006, 02:57:31 am »

I finally decided I can't take my DSLR everywhere I travel (especially on business trips when I'm dragging other things with me)... so after much digging I went with the Canon G6 for three simple reasons.
1) uses same batteries as the 10D & 20D.
2) uses CF cards.... one of the last to do so (and I have a ton of those)
3) The menuing system is familiar enough that I'm not learning new terminology.

I wasn't concerned about all the other bells & whistles... I just wanted something portable and this made sense to me.

What do you use?

Couldn't bring myself to keep my G5.  I think I had it about a month.  I looked and looked and finally just bought the 10D and a 28-135 IS lens. Never without it.  I have other primes and even one L lens but the zoom with IS is my version of a point and shoot rig.  I just can't abide those itty bitty sensors on P&S digicams.

I still use my Canon A20 if I am travelling light. I also it use for snaps and quick record shots. It is only 2MP but is fine for those purposes. Otherwise I carry my 10D with my old 28-105 USM MK1. The lens is very sharp and reasonably light and the autofocus pretty reliable. It was the first Canon lens I bought with my EOS 5.

Sony R1 - deciding factor was that the ISO performance is similar to what I'm used to in a Canon DSLR.

I have a G3 but hardly use it. Eventually I want to get one of those ultra slim credit card-sized cameras if I can find one that shoots raw and is not made by Sony.

Until you are lugging a laptop with accessories, and briefcase complete with files, and a suitecase for 1.5 weeks of travel living out of a hotel... suddenly taking a 20D with my 28-135IS and I'm juggling just too many things... add to the fact that when I'm on business it's usually very long days and seldom time to get out and shoot.

Otherwise it's always my 20D with a full complement of lenses, etc.

These days I am using the Panasonic LX1. It is a straightforward camera to use, with true panoramic format, image stabilization, Raw, and a very nice lens. All in a small package. It is so simple to use, and it works so well, that I even forget I am using a digital camera, because I only need to put the comand dial in aperture priority mode, and that's it.

My only complaint is that the battery does not last for long.

Another vote for the Fujifilm F10 or F11 (the latter isn't available in the US; probably not in Canada either).  If you compare image-quality tests at DPReview, the F10/F11 does *extremely* well for something so small and portable.

I always carry a small Pentax Optio WP. It's waterproof, so I could carry it to the beach and into the pool/ocean during our summer vacation. Picture quality is okay for snapshots, but not much more than that.

I'm thinking of buying a Pentax *istDs and a pancake lens for serious photography on the road. That should make a small package with great image quality.
