5D Neutral setting & PK Sharpener
« on: January 16, 2006, 09:20:50 am »

Anyone using the 5D & PhotoKit Sharpener ?

Selecting the Neutral picture setting on the 5D applies no sharpening (or other effects). Trying out PK Sharpener, I selected Capture Sharpening - High Res (recommended for camera's over 8 MP) and the Wide sharpen (recommended for image content like portraits)option, but still find an aweful "texture" on the skin. Almost like a "reticulation" (for those of you that ever used too hot a developer in the old darkroom:-) Probably just over sharpening. How do you handle it?

A few things can be tried:

1. Since you're shooting JPEG, sharpening is still being applied in camera. Shoot a RAW frame and develop it with sharpening turned off in ACR. Experiment with the camera settings until you find the one that best matches.

2. I typically like the Medium setting in PK better than the wide for portraits.

3. Since PK applies thins in layers, experiment with changing the opacity settings for each layer (they start at 50% ).

4. You might want to try Sharpen & Smooth to compensate for the added noise of a Jpeg.
