Why not use watercolors if that's what you're after?

It seems a little too contrasty to me to be taken as a watercolor, but it's a nice image nevertheless.

I very much like the first version. It seems to be a pen and ink style, like some of the paintings of flowers found in old books. The second version (on my uncalibrated monitor) looks pinkish and not as pleasing as the first. In either case: nice phal!

The water-colour concept doesn't work with the hard shadows of on-camera flash.

Ok. One of those lights is right above camera, where on-camera flash would be. This is what gives the picture an on-camera flash look. Nothing wrong with that (it's my favourite style of lighting), but it's a very 'photographic' look, and this works against getting a painterly appearance. IMO.
