Early instars of the Hickory Horned Devil Caterpillar
« on: March 04, 2015, 11:23:07 am »

Here are some other images of the Hickory Horned Devil Caterpillar that I started a thread about a few days back...Had found this caterpillar this past Summer & was lucky enough to get images of the first several instars. Note the physical differnces between the 1st & 2nd instars. On the 3rd instar, they were that brownish color, but then changed to black. After this point, I was no longer able to find it.

1st Instar

2nd to 3rd instar (note that after the metamorphosis, the caterpillar is kinda brownish)

3rd instar (here it was changing to black)

Wow, really amazing caterpillars!  And nicely photographed as well!!

I need to focus my vision this year and see if I can spot more than only the standard type caterpillars where I live.  Can't recall seeing any as exotic as those you've posted.

Well done, thanks for posting!

All lovely, but the weird structures and colours, and two-dimensionality, in #1 are intriguing.
