Capture One Pro 7 - Crops original image file.
« on: February 28, 2015, 12:39:02 am »

I just noticed that the main window of Capture One Pro 7 doesn't show the full image.

It crops it. I went to Command + 0 to show the whole image, but it did not.

I noticed it on a shot where I made sure a certain detail was in the image.

Well, it was in the image. It showed in the film strip.

But it does not show up in the main image window, as the main image window does not show the whole image.

One up:

When I export the image to Photoshop, the image is still cropped.

This means that Capture One Pro 7 has a terrible bug that takes away from the image file your created.

Is the result of lens correction being applied, I believe.

Yes, that's the lens correction tool in action.

I set it back to 0%, and the whole frame comes back.

What a shock. I mean, with the part of the image missing this image would have been dead.

In future, I'll leave a bit of extra space around. I mostly don't crop images and compose in camera, but it looks like I have to change my ways.

What kind of distortion is being corrected there? Isn't the Canon lens, while not a top lens, a pretty good lens? What is being done here?

I also wonder if you don't have to take a hit in image quality when applying lens correction.

Looking at 100%, the Camera RAW file had better detail than the lens corrected Capture One file. I always thought that Capture One had an advantage over Camera RAW in image quality.

So, if you are going for detail and sharpness - turn off lens correction?

If yes: how do you do that by default?

Hi,

In principle, the distortion correction involves resampling, which degrades pixel integrity.

Yes, and unless you shoot stuff like architecture, why correct lens distortion anyway?

You can save a Default User Style (Menu Adjustment|Styles), and uncheck the distortion option, or save it as you've got it currently set up (zero distortion correction). You can also create a lens correction Preset, which allows to switch settings for some lenses without having to check if all settings are as you want every time you switch.

Cheers,
Bart

Thank you, Bart!

This was very helpful.

I'll turn off lens correction. Not needed for fashion photography.

You can switch off lens correction from the tool's action menu. This prevents you from creating and applying a style.

I couldn't find any tool action menu.

I would like to turn off lens distortion correction for all files, even those already processed.

Is this possible?

I couldn't find any menu item where I could tick off distortion correction. Its buried somewhere in submenus - just wonder where.
