Printing out of lightroom
« on: February 27, 2015, 07:13:57 pm »

Hello,

Typically I print out of photoshop but for a personal project I am hoping to print out of lightroom as it will make my life much easier.  Unfortunately I'm running into an issue with aspect ratio.  I have some odd aspect ratio images that I want to print on a 5x7 size print.  Unfortunately when I drag the image into the 5x7 part of the layout page it either changes from 5x7 or it crops the image.

Is there anyway to do this or will I manually have to bring everything into photoshop to create an odd sized image on a 5x7 canvas?

Thanks so much,
Nick

What is the Cell Size in the template you're working with? That's kind of key. Make sure "Show Guides" is on and then "Dimensions" check box which should help.

Try this:

Layout style: Single image/Contact sheet
Image settings: tick rotate to fit

Page setup: select 5X7 or make a paper template of that size
Margins: just for luck I used 0.4 inch
Make the cell size as large as the sliders will go

I can set up any image of any dimensions and ratios to sit nicely in the cell with no cut-offs or change in ratio.

I have attached files showing my current set up.

Tony, Single image/ contact sheet doesn't work so well as I need different images per sheet (I'm printing on rolls of paper.)

Nick I think a bit more detail about your proposed workflow might be helpful.
What I understand so far seems overly complicated but I don't have the full picture yet.

A useful bit of information for a start would be the size of the paper roll.

I have tried the checkbox but all it seems to do is resize the print to say, 3x7 instead of 5x7.

These prints are on a 24" roll but I'll be switching to a 36" roll today for the sake of speed. The working area here is 7.25x24".

Unfortunately when I drag the image into the 5x7 part of the layout page it either changes from 5x7 or it crops the image.

Nick, to paraphrase, here is what you said: "When I drag the round peg into the square hole it doesn't fit correctly." Of course not. Something has to give! It's either going to get cropped,  squashed or stretched! That's just the way it is and LR is only good at the cropping part of that.

Is there anyway to do this or will I manually have to bring everything into photoshop to create an odd sized image on a 5x7 canvas?

You'll have to edit in PS to have creative control over the cropping, squashing and stretching.    - Jim

Ok, point taken.  I suppose I was just hoping that the image would have larger borders on one side than the other in the sense of a false matte.  Hi ho Hi ho, off to photoshop I go.

What you've been talking about has not been clear enough for us (at least me) to respond correctly.  Your last post clears things up, I think/hope.  You can do what I think you want easily.

Example.....a 3x7 ratio image that I want to print on 5x7 paper.  I go to the print module.  I select 5x7 paper.  Under Image Settings on the right of the print module, turn Zoom to Fit  OFF  and Rotate to Fit  ON.

I set Layout with smallest margins my printer will accept (0.13").   Cell size is 6.75 x 4.75.

I get my exact 3x7 ratio image, without any cropping, with 0.13 margins on the top/bottom ie, 6.75" image and 1.05 " margins on the sides, ie, 2.89" image.

I think your problem has been that you've had Zoom to Fit checked ON.

On larger paper size, assuming you want actual 5" or 7" as the controlling dimension, simply choose 5' x 7" Cell size.  It would print, for example, a SQUARE image at 5" x 5" centered in that cell with a 1" margin at one of the opposite ends.  It would print a 1x7 ratio image at 1" x 7" if you have Rotate to Fit checked, with 2" margin against the 1" image width.

If I've understood correctly what you want to do, does this clear it up for you?

This is exactly it Brad! I don't have a zoom to fit option to uncheck though.  All I have is the rotate to fit and lock photo to aspect ratio boxes.

Ok, I found it.  I was in the custom image package and I needed to be in the single image, contact sheet package. Thank you all for your help.

Recently, any image sent from the Develop Module to the Print Module is not the same. It is always the FIRST image in a Folder that is transferred over to the Print Mod. This happens no matter what Folder is  selected. This has not happened previously. Been shooting in Cuba, returned after two weeks and this issue has just happened. Running LR 5.7.1. The MacPro is only running LR. Nothing has been changed recently except the import of Cuba photos.

Seems to be a LR issue but cannot figure what is happening.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

No need to hijack a tread, ajz, particularly when you have started a new on on this issue.  Manners.   ::)
