Ontario to Florida - what not to miss?
« on: January 13, 2006, 07:52:37 pm »

Hi all. I had a great time this summer in Cape Breton, and was grateful for your suggestions regarding good shots.

I am driving to Florida to see the Tutankhamon exhibit at the Art Museum (see my site www.inetsonic.com/kate/tut/ if you are interested in that subject). I have determined to take as many trips through as many mountains as possible, and to go to Savannah and to the Everglades (one day only, break my heart). Generally we will drive south on the way there and north on the way back - Blue Ridge Parkway, the Smokies, ...

I wonder if you guys and gals have any specific suggestions for me - It's a short trip, mostly driving, but it will be SO MUCH FUN I CAN HARDLY WAIT.

Guess who has never been south of Boston? Okay, nevermind, it's me.

If you have the time - Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway (yes, even in winter)

Get on at Front Royal and go all the way to Great Smoky N.P.

North of Charleston:

St. Augustine FL.

I see you mentioned the parkway. There is the Biltmore in Asheville NC:

I'm in SC now but was born and grew up in Miami. If you have any questions, just ask! Have fun. I took a trip to Austin TX last year and drove the whole way. Enjoyed it all - well maybe not the traffic jams

Thank you all - I have now decided on a number of things and know that there isn't time for all of them. I expect I will want to do the Smokies in the summer and also the parkway.

We will be following the Skyline Drive and stopping in Charlottesville for a tour of Montecello, back to the Skyline, following the Blue Ridge Parkway and then cutting across country to I77 to Charleston and Savannah, down the coast to Ft. Lauderdale.

We plan a trip to the Everglades and then we will drive up the Gulf side. Does anyone have any specific spots on the way to Tallahassee that we should see? A perfect beach, tons of birds, lovely landforms? (I have never been to Florida and I hope that the entire water is not taken up by private development.)

We plan to head for Atlanta and the Smokies, joining I75 and home up I75 from there.

If anyone has any suggestions for this route I would be very grateful to hear them.

I am hoping that the unseasonably warm winter in Canada is an indication of the winter in the States so that the mountain routes will be okay.

Thanks for any help.

If you are interested in wildlife, then try to get to the Blackwater National Wildlife preserve on Maryland's eastern shore. It is southeast of Cambridge off of route 50. If you are into birds, then this is the place to go.

As to weather, it has been relatively mild and wild in the mid-atlantic so far. We have had temps in the teens and in the upper 50s since December. In the western part of the state they have had several snow storms, but in Baltimore it has for the most part been just rain.

Weird, my mother used to blame it on all those rockets they were shooting up into space.   Who knows?

Pickup a Guide to Florida parks and conservation areas at a tourist bureau.  Corkscrew Swamp approx 30 km inland from Naples, with it's boardwalk through the swamp & Cypress forest great for various birds,
and alligators, fauna, etc.  Also,Ding Darling Park on Sanible Island if you are near Ft. Myers is amazing for close encounters with wading birds, hawks, etc.
