Peter Lik - Best Selling Photographer Ever
« on: February 22, 2015, 08:25:11 am »

I had never heard of this fellow until I read the length article in today's New York Times business section.  He just sold a single image for over $6M.  I would be interested to know what folks think.

Great American story. And I loved his remarks on Ansel what's-his-name.

Lik's galleries are essentially the same as piano stores in the USA. High pressure sales machines.

Interesting to see the gross numbers. $440M. Now this may or may not be a real number. If real, it suggests that Lik could well be in trouble.

The burn rate on his business has to be pretty epic given his retail spaces. Those prints are not cheap to make. $440M gross sounds like a lot until you start breaking it down. He could be broke. He could be doing great. Hard to tell. But the answer isn't obvious at all.

I've been in his galleries a couple times. And yes the sales associates are disgustingly overbearing.
