It's all done with layers, and a simple B/W conversion in PS or LR.

I like Slobodon's version, (no doubt hurriedly done for illustration)  -

Just play with it for dramatic effect.  It's potentially a very interesting photo in it's bleakness.

I like very much both, but the two pathetically snobbish trees in the second one are really a plus.

Pathetically hopeful? My impression in this region is that homesteads with extensive plantings succeed whilst those without are more likely to be abandoned.
