Silverfast scanner software
« on: January 11, 2006, 11:54:05 am »

I just got an Epson 4990 scanner to digitize my slides and negatives. ( I know a dedicated scanner might be more appropriate but with 6x6 as well as 35mm and APS - time and money were factored into this decision) This scanner comes with Silverfast SE software. Would it be worth upgrading to Ai 6? Has anyone any experience with Silverfast software?

No experience, but you may want to check out the review at:

Ken I recently purchased the 4990 also.  I did not like silverfast. It was slow and cumberson.  I uninstalled it. Also with my 4990 I received a version of photoshop.  Thats what I use.  It does all the same things that silverfast does.

Silverfast is dedicated scanner software and PS is editing software. Two very different beasts. Silverfast is actually very good software and the latest version supports ICE which is very cool. The supplied Epson software is like Canon's: mediocre, at least with the 4870 which is what I own. I would upgrade to the full version. Beware it does have a rather steep learning curve but it's worth it. Check at i-photo.co.uk Vincent 's great review.
