Paper settings for premium luster 260 on a 3880
« on: February 10, 2015, 06:39:04 pm »

I purchased a roll of epson premium luster260 for my 3880.  I am trying to print closer to the 4x6 native format than the 17x23 papers allow.
I like the luster paper, and although only available in a 16" roll thought I would try it for my first attempt.
The roll paper is 260 weight while the cut sheet is 240.
Do I need to manually change any settings- platen gap, paper thickness or anything??
Thanks in advance for any help.

according to this, they are the same thickness and merely roll vs. cut-sheet.

Sounds good to me.
Main reason I asked is the info sheet that came with the roll of 260 said "do not select premium luster photo paper 250 or Premium luster photo paper for Premium Luster Photo Paper 260.

Just wanted to double check
Thanks

does the insert page say anything more?  Do they tell you what you should use (instead of just giving you anti-rules).

This is where a cheap pair of digital calipers to measure the paper thickness comes in handy.

What prompted you to buy a roll of this, esp for a non-roll supported 3880?

It just goes to show, there are times when it is better to not read the instructions.

Although it does make me want to look in the roll boxes and see if I still have one of those info sheets.

Great question- actually I want to print at my native 4x6 ratio- so I was looking for 17x25 paper.  I have always used Epson papers and they do not make a 17x25 so I thought I would try cutting from a roll.
The luster is one of my favorite papers, but is only available in 16 inch width, but thought I would give it a try.

I agree, reading the instructions is often my downfall.  They simply say select premium luster 260, but I do not have that option.
Will likely give it a go later tomorrow, and if I get any strikes widen the platen?

I have never found the difference between 260 gsm and 250 gsm to make any difference.

You might be interested in this post from a while back, though you will have to read most of it to understand the differences between Ultra Premium and Premium (they are basically the same paper). Dano works, or worked for Epson:

Just as a heads up in case anyone looks this up in the future- the 260 wt paper printed fine.
Just like others mentioned I had a very slight tilt at the end of the print- less than 1/16" so I can cover that up easily as I mat and frame.
Thanks for your help.

Roll is called Premium Luster Photo Paper (260) while cut sheet is called Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster (This is the cut-sheet version of Premium Luster Photo Paper (260))  Same damn thing.  Can go into the top slot because not too thick and it is flexible.

Pretty sure the paper setting on the 3880 is for the Premium Luster Photo Paper (260) while on my R2400 it is Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster.

I just printed test images on Cold Press Bright, Hot Press Bright, Exhibition Fiber and Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster.  While they all have their own unique characteristics, it is amazing how well the Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster holds up against the newer papers.  I do wish it was a little thicker and more rigid, but it is about 1/4 the price of the Exhibition Fiber: $79 24" x 100' Luster (260) versus $149 24" x 50' rolls.  The Hot and Cold Press in 24" x 50' are both $106.

Oh, and I have a 24" rototrimmer.  Since you mentioned wanting to print 17 x 23,  my recommendation, depending on your own needs, is to buy 24" roll and cut to width of 17" if you have the capability.  Cheaper than buying 17x22.5 inch sheets.

Thanks for the idea.  I have a 30" rototrimmer that can do the job.
