Subforums are slow
« on: January 09, 2006, 12:50:40 pm »

This is a strange one, and I'm wondering if others are experiencing the same thing.

When I'm accessing new posts, topics etc. in "Cameras, Lenses and Shooting Gear", "Digital Image Processing", "Digital Cameras, Backs and Shooting Techniques" etc., the forum is extremely slow in responding to a click on the link for tracking, on replying to new posts, previewing, etc.

But it's still quite fast when I went to this part of the forum, "About This Site".

My guess is that this is a database optimization issue, that the number of posts, search words or something has passed a performance threshold in the database for those boards mentioned above, while the relatively low traffic on this board is no problem yet.

(We usually tell our customers "so clean up your old posts and stored searches, then", but I wouldn't want old posts to disappear from the LL forum.)

Edit: posting this new topic was also dead slow, but tracking it and hitting the "edit" button was quick.

I would guess that the site is being hammered due to the review of the new Adobe beta software "Lightroom".

A number of other sites are pointing to the review by Michael. Including DPReview, and others.

That's the problem. My server is bukling under the number of simultanious readers (about 300+ at any one time), when the usual is about 150.

Also, the Lightroom article is very large, with lots of large files, and the sample Slideshow and Flash demo are big as well.

18,000 unique readers in the first 12 hours.

It'll slaken off in a day or so.

Ah, yes, I guess that explains it. It would fit nicely with how caching etc. can run into problems under such loads.

Thanks for clearing that up.

That also reminds me to download the demo so that I can add to the load.

It was very considerate of Adobe to hold back the PC version so that those of us who don't have Macs won't be clogging the wires until after the hubub dies down a little. We'll just sit home and drool.

It will be a little like waiting for the next LLVJ, or the Bangladesh book if you live in Europe.
