Here's another option: http://www.swatchmate.com I bought one of these as a kickstarter project. There CC app is just about ready.
My review of the SwatchMate Cube may be of interest.

That's an interesting read, Graeme. I have been meaning to try mine against the Pro 2. Looks like I should get off my butt and do it.

.... here is how I take spot measurements using i1Profiler and my i1Pro2:

Calibrate the iPro2 on the calibration plate.
Insert the spot measurement "Positioning Target" plastic base into the i1Pro2.
Select the Advanced Mode in i1Profiler.
Select Measure Chart option in the Workflow Selector.
Specify you are using i1Pro2
Create a chart that is the number of patches you wish to measure (can be one patch if only making one measurement).
Go to the next step, Measurement, and Spot Measurement.
Position the i1Pro2 over the spot and make the measurement.
Save the information as a CGATS file (txt). That will allow you to now open up the text file and you will see the LAB values for that color patch.

Note:  The above requires i1Profiler version 1.3.1 or later.

Dave

I have a similar need for text files containing spot measurements, and this method seems to work but I don't understand the CGATS file format.  I see 42 fields for each measurement patch.

The first three all are "150" for every patch. The next three look like CIELAB values, which is what I want.  Then there are another 36 entries for each patch.  Can someone explain those and the 150s?  Thanks.

Try SpectraShop software from Robin Meyers.
I have and it works ok. But the info does exist in the i1 profiler exported file and I had been just hoping to save $100 and the need to maintain another app. Another annoying thing that worked fine in the previous version and doesn't (at least not similarly) in i1 profiler.

In my limited knowledge in such things, you have RGB values first, and what follows are the spectral values obtained from the spot measurement. What I do is when the CGATS file contains RGB reference values that had generated the target, I strip out those values and keep the spectral measurements. I then use the result with other software. Even when the RGB values are of the measured target, the spectral values will be more accurate and I think all that is needed for profile generation.

As a side note, I use a UNIX style utility with a GUI front end that understands the extended matching and substitution meta-characters set.
