manual focus of lenses

Good Day Folks,
The lenses that I got which are some Canon, some Sigma, and a Tamron for the most part behave this way:  In manual focus, when taking a landscape with the main subject being in the background (miles away) I always assume that all's I got to do is turn the focus ring to infinity and fire away.  However, how come I always got to turn the focus ring back some to get the aforementioned background in focus? Is this a manufacturers defect or is this the norm?

See the topic below about infinity focus started by pom - it has to do with expansion/contraction due to temperature...
