Epson 9900 setting question.
« on: January 15, 2015, 01:09:26 pm »

Anybody knows what this "processed by printer" means, and when it has to be "on" or "off".
This is in the Epson 9900 print driver.

Sorry, never seen this. But I'm on a Windows machine and this looks Mac-ish.    - Jim

Is this the Epson driver or the Apple driver?  Never seen that, either.

I've been informed that this determines whether the conversion from RGB data to the printer's language happens in the printer or on the computer.  For photographic work, it will be more efficient to tick it (as it is now).

I am pretty sure that this is not an epson menu or an Adobe menu. I am guessing here that this is also not part of Epson printer installation settings for the  operating system settings (mac or windows.) My guess is that this would by a printer setting in a third party application- where you can specify what printer you are using and maximize the settings for the third party program.

Please let us know- that would be a helpful bit of information. If the program provides color management- it would depend on how good the color management is in the program as opposed to what the epson driver does.

This is part of the Epson driver, nothing to do with Adobe or Apple.  I think it dates back to days when computers were slower .. at this point with modern computers I don’t think there will be any difference.

here is the official text from the user manual

“Processed by Printer allows the halftone output processing to be performed by the printer.  This feature speeds processing, especially for older computers, and ensures that the printer runs at maximum speed.  This involves image compression and decompression, and does not affect the quality of your output.”

Thank you Wayne. I didn't think to search in the manual ...! What is your choice , On or Off? (Even if it is not important)

I’ve never bothered changing or trying anything other than the default which is on. the printer has enough computing power to handle the task, so even though the computer feeding it has more power so it may process the job faster, it won’t gain anything (quality or speed wise).

as they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
