Arsat lens on Canon EOS body
« on: December 31, 2005, 03:17:55 pm »

The following image was made using an 80mm Arsat lens (that came with my Kiev 60) mounted to the front of my Canon EOS 20D with an adapter I found on eBay:

It feels kind of weird using a clunky old Soviet era manual lens with a whizz-bang digicam, but the picture quality was surprisingly good. I plan to play with it some more this afternoon. I've also got a 35mm Arsat kicking around that has some wicked distortion to it, but it has yet to surface since my move out to the countryside. That should be fun to play with as well.

I've been looking at some of the tilt shift lenses from kievcamera.  This one of theirs?  (I presume they just import them.)

Not a T/S, I'm afraid -- just a dirt cheap 80mm that provides pretty good bang for the buck (if you don't mind a complete lack of optic coatings and things like metallic silver aperture blades that can cause some funky effects in your images).

I did some more playing around this afternoon. Here's the picture quality the lens produces on a Canon when viewed at 100% in Photoshop:

I adjusted the levels and saturation, but left out sharpening the image.

First all that German stuff, then this.  What is it about those fomer communist countries that enables them to make nice lenses?

You should see the camera that the lens came attached to. It's, um, tempermental.
