I seriously wouldn't know how to save this in post.  Yet if a variable ND was the culprit before that stage you might be interested to know that B+W have recently introduced a new line of top of the bill variable ND filters which should even if used at max stopping power have no impact in IQ, they are max. 5 stops however. Read this in the january issue of the german "Naturfoto" magazine, they tested them and were very positive about these.

Print it out large, frame it & put it on your wall, it's a very striking image.

With all of the equipment you have I should think you could find a lens hood. That would at least take care of the lens flare. If you have this image in RAW you might be able to salvage it.
