Edit in PS broken ... what backup method are you using
« on: January 11, 2015, 06:33:54 pm »

For those who have seen issues of the wrong copy of photoshop opening when using the default open in Photoshop option in Lightroom, could you please let me know how you are backing up or how that 2nd copy was made.  I’ve been in a discussion with someone at Adobe and it seems they are struggling trying to isolate what circumstance can lead to this ...

Other - Norton 360.

No problem as backups are compressed and .exe files cannot be opened from within back-up (only after a restore).

TM isn't a good idea for LR files IMHO. I have all the data on a dedicate drive, back it up with ChronoSync (used to use SuperDuper). Photoshop is on the boot drive as is LR in the same Application folder and I backup again with ChronoSync. No issues. The boot drive is also backing up to TM but again, all associated files LR uses is on another drive if that means anything.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner (latest version) to back up the Mac hard drive to an external drive.  I also use Time Machine to back up the Mac hard drive to a different external drive.  Mac OS 10.10.1

No images on my Mac Hard drive.  Images are on one Drobo and backedup to a second Drobo.

LR catalog and presets are backed up to the Drobo RAIDs.

On my Mac hard drive I have:

- PS CS 5.1
- PS CS 6
- PS CS CC
- PS CS 2014
- LR 4
- LR 5

I am using SuperDuper to back up primary Mac Pro SSD drive to an external hard drive. The only way I can get the Lightroom to Photoshop process to work correctly is to eject and disconnect the external hard drive with the SuperDuper backup.

Couldn't Adobe fix this by enabling one to specify the file path to the correct version of Photoshop in Lightroom Preferences?

I use ChronoSync to backup my MBP to an external and I use it to backup two computers remotely (using ChronoAgent). I love ChronoSync and feel very safe that it is doing its job. Been using it for years and have never had any major issues.

Is your ChronoSync backup of the application folder “live” and available when you choose “open in PS” from within LR, or does ChronoSync mount/backup/unmount the bu volume?

It's live (Mounted) at all times.

I appreciate the feedback ... for those interested this issue has been escalated by Adobe, who have contacted Apple with the issue, as it appears to be a problem in LaunchServices.

For those that do have the problem, supposedly preventing Spotlight from indexing your backup volumes (good idea anyway) and resetting the LaunchServices database should resolve the issue.

If you try this method to fix the issue of the wrong copy of photoshop launching when you use “open in photoshop” from Lightroom I would appreciate feedback on whether or not it resolved the problem, either respond in this thread or PM.

I specifically don't have Spotlight indexing the backup drive.

I use Super Duper and Time Machine.

The fixes (Spotlight and resetting Launch Services) did not work for me.

OS: Yosemite
CarbonCopyCloner

Thanks, Wayne, the suggested fixes DID work, but with a small precaution :

1 - create Spotlight exclusions
2 - run 'reset LaunchServices'
3 - disconnect all backup drives from the Mac, and reboot
4 - with external drives still NOT connected, open all programs affected once ( i.e. Lr, Ps, C1 etc) and then close
5 - shut down and reconnect all external drives
6 - good to go

Ok, Manoli's steps seem to have done the trick. Hopefully it sticks.

Very helpful.  The extra steps are probably key to LaunchServices resetting correctly. Thx.

Forwarded this on to Adobe.

I haven't had to reset the Launch Services.  For me stopping the indexing in Spot Light did the trick.  After doing that LR popped a message that PS CC had moved and asked if I wanted to update the location.  After that its been smooth sailing so far.

Well, the annoyance is back again after a respite for a few weeks.  I thought stopping Spotlight from indexing drives would do it but apparently that's not a great fix.  Has anyone tried the Reset LaunchServices Registrer.app and had success????

I’ve been working with this.  resetting launch services and limiting spotlight does not seem to always alleviate the problem.  I fought with this a few days ago, and despite a reset of launch services, LR was still trying to launch a rogue copy of PS that I had left on a of my laptop which was being backed up to a volume on my Mac Pro’s hard drive.

So far the only reliable method I have found to ensure the correct copy of PS is being launched it to a) set it as my secondary editor, which unfortunately doesn’t work for open as smart object choice, or b) make sure there is only 1 copy of photoshop anywhere in the entire system.  I believe once that condition has been met, and launch services have been reset, copies can exist on other drives as long as those drives are not being indexed by spotlight.

I have heard no followup from Adobe on this, so I’m not sure what the status is.  Hopefully they can at least address it with the release of 6 (whenever that might be).
