Help please with vignetting Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS
« on: December 29, 2005, 09:12:31 pm »

I was a very lucky girl and recieved a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS lens for Christmas. I am concerned however at the amount of vignetting present, especially on the left side of the image.

I have attached images below, just walking out my front door and clicking away - no thought about composition, just to get blue sky to see vignetting.

I used 1DS mk2 with lens hood and no filter. I used CS2 defaults from RAW and resized and saved for here.

Vignetting present and quite evident up to f5.6 but still present at f.8. Surely this should not be the case for this lens?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Julie

It almost looks like the lens hood isn't on quite straight...try removing it and repeating the exercise.

What focal length?

Thanks for replying Jonathan. I thought the same thing about the lens hood after my first pics at the beach yesterday - so i took particular care to ensure that for my test shots thismorning it was on straight. Will go and take a few more again at different focal lenghts.

focal lengths for the images I posted - from top to bottom.... 70mm, 70mm, 200mm, 70mm, 200mm.

I tested again. Checked hood thoroughly. Red dot to red dot...smoothly turn until key matches red dot....all even and straight - and these are the pics.

The sun is behind me , but the afternoon light is more to the left - where the darker areas of the vignetting are.

I think your lens is just fine, based on the following test data from Photozone (PZ):

1. At the long end [200mm] some slight Vignetting
2. Shooting specific - Bright Sky - emphasizes this.
3. Having a Full-Frame body - like yours.

When shooting bright, stepping it down a little, and avoiding the long end focal, will cure.

See here PZ Vignetting test report:

Thanks roli_bark for your the info. I will bear the information in mind whilst shooting.

I am still a little perplexed as to why the vignetting is more promounced on the left - and not balanced. Would this not indicate some sort of manufacture discrepancy somewhere in the lens? Is this a common occurrance?

Seems not quite right for a lens which cost nearly $4,000 AU.

Anyone else with this lens have similar results?

These are full-frame, uncropped images shot with my 70-200:

If you look close, you can find a bit of vignetting, but not as much as in your shots, especially when considering that part of it is due to the background not being perfectly evenly lit. I'd be inclined to attempt to exchange it, especially given the unevenness of the vignetting.
