Huh!? If I did, then address that, not guns.

It wasn't addressed to you per se, but rather the train of thought and posts that others had already made, and that you commented on. Hence your post.

And most of them had managed to leave it behind. My old headmaster was a tank commander at Normandy BTW, and would have railed very strongly against any movement directed against any faith.

If his family had been lined up, shot, and beheaded, he might not have been so forgiving.

Oh I think he came across plenty of evidence of that sort of thing going on, yet he was big enough to forgive although not condone, and there is a great difference.

There have been twelve deaths in France due to terrorist activity, which is deeply saddening, but thankfully still a rather rare occurrence. Yet we look across to the Atlantic and note in some disbelief that over 12,000 Americans were slaughtered by their own people last year! Is it any wonder some may think it legitimate to consider the possibility of double standards being involved?

Only if you ignore the hundreds of thousands slaughtered by ISIS and friends in the name of Allah in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and elsewhere.

War is one game which is far better to play "away" than "home". Every jihadi killed in the sandbox is one less individual able to commit mayhem in an American or European city.

Keep this in mind:

Two intelligent, educated, reasonable people, given the same information, can and often do arrive at different conclusions.

Someone who disagrees with you is not necessarily stupid, ignorant, or evil. He's just not you.

the value of any discussion is diminished by absence of the other side... the real other side that is...

I think we heard arguments of the other side, loud and clear.

Are you seriously proposing that one can't have a valid discussion about terrorism unless ISIS or Al-Qaeda operatives are part of the conversation?

To Manoli, re The Economist graph: which other terrorism is out there, if not religious? Not saying there isn't one, just can't remember any specifically. Red Brigades are long gone, no?

I think Jonathan raised a valid question. Ad hominems only weaken one's own position.

It would appear that it's not only Islam that's lodged securely in the eighth century

It wasn't any sort of attack, but genuine advice. I'm not kidding.
