i1 Pro Spectro Question; Refurb or Upgrade?
« on: January 09, 2015, 09:00:16 am »

Back in 2003 or 2004, I bought an I1 Pro spectro. After being in storage for 7 years, the light bulb used for reading printer charts has burned out, and it probably needs recalibration. That particular model has been discontinued, but X-Rite says they will refurb it for $450.

If I get it refurbed, will the current profiling software support it? Or will I need to run something older that may not be supported by Windows 7/8? X-Rite's web site is not clear about this.

I'm no longer doing photography professionally, so it's harder to justify the expense of a new spectro for a part-time hobby.

my hunch is that you'd be best off contacting XRite directly w the serial # as that unit went through a number of 'revisions'.  But overall,
the current i1Profiler software will support it.

Yes, the latest version; i1 Profiler/publish will work with the original i1Pro hardware. That's a chargeable upgrade for that software.

If you're on a PC you can still use the original software, i1 Match, but if you're on a Mac you'll have to either buy the upgrade, or use different software completely eg Argyll.
I doubt it would make economic sense to refurb the original i1 Pro and then have to buy the software upgrade as the difference in cost between buying a whole new package with the improved i1 Pro 2 would be so little.
They were offering trade-ins last year, so it might be worth contacting X-Rite and seeing what they can offer you.

I'm running Windows 8. I'll talk to x-Rite about software options.
