Enchanted Forest
« on: January 07, 2015, 11:42:18 am »

Yes I know, 'Enchanted Forest' is a bit of a cheesy name isn't it, but I couldn't think of anything more appropriate for this image - sorry  :)

This is an example of the stunted yet enchanted looking forests of lichen covered trees, that we have in abundance up here in the NW of Scotland. These trees although small, in actual fact can be quite ancient, as the peaty soil that they choose to grow in, is so low in nutrients, that it can take maybe a hundred years just to grow up to head height.

Interesting lichen color: neon, glow-in-the-dark, light green? Or you used a foam spray?  ;)

You are correct Slobodan about the glow-in-the-dark effect, in soft but fairly bright light, this type of lichen does appear to glow or fluoresce slightly. I have an image that has been quite a popular selling canvas print for me so far, and people often ask me if they can touch the canvas, because it looks as though I have stuck pieces of cotton wool onto it, as it looks so three dimensional and also seems to glow - an odd effect I must admit and I don't know why or how this occurs, but it does and is quite popular as a result :)

I remember seeing that sort of feffect with lichens in Southland, New Zealand as well. Whether it is the type of lichens or the type of ambient light it gets I don't know.

All botanics aside, that is a lovely scene. I am sure much more enjoyable as a large print, rather than a small jpeg.

Thanks everyone  ;)

I am back down at my parents under the dreary grey skies of Sheffield at the moment and what a scary 500 mile drive down from the IoS late yesterday that was :o, but atrocious weather aside, I can't wait to get back home again to Skye.

Thanks again  ;D

Great image, I really like the repeating pattern in the tree trunks - plenty to keep you looking deeper and deeper into the image.

I just noticed this mage today. I love those bright overcast days, and your wonderful lichen covered forest shows what can be done is such great light. Beautiful balance of green and verticals. Great shot.

Nicely done, Dave, including the "neon" tree! That's what makes the image balance and pop to me.

I asked all the faeries if they would be kind enough to temporarily move out of the shot for me and fly away from the glowing tree for a spell, they were not happy at first I must admit, but eventually they did agree to move out of the way for the pano shot - do you think I should have let them stay in the shot?   ;)
