Scandinavia in winter?
« on: January 06, 2015, 01:59:12 pm »

Any particular recommendations for where is best in Scandinavia for a potential winter trip, ideally hoping for a chance to see the Northern lights, but preferably somewhere with good winter landscape opportunities in the day and if they don't show.

I've got up to a couple of weeks available around Feb-March.

In particular does anyone know what the travel is like in the far north - will normal hire cars be able to get everywhere, or will just main roads be accessible?

Thanks,

Simon

Think Norway, rather than Sweden.

Think travel by boat rather than road.

The rest is limited only by your imagination and sense of adventure.

My favorite place is Abisko.

Hire a car in Kiruna, good roads. Or take the train; easily walkable.

I agree, Abisko is the place. You can fly to Kiruna, rent a car there and drive 80 kms to Abisko. Good hotel, beautiful environments with easy access. The road (there is only one) from Kiruna to Narvik should be open (if there is a snow storm it could be closed for a short time). You can also get directly from Stockholm to Abisko by train.
Other options are Bjoerkliden and Riksgraensen on the same road.

Lofoten Norway. Dramatic mountains and rugged coastline with very good chance of aurora.

I live in the north of Sweden.

Thanks for all the suggestions - current thinking is a few days in Tromso, then to take the Hurtigruten ferry south to Trondheim through the Lofoten Isles, then train across Norway back to Oslo.

Any specific places within range of Tromso to head for in particular, as that is likely the only time we have our own transport?
